Job Title: Part-Time Garden teacher (K-2 Garden/Nutrition/Outdoors Multi-Arts Ecology [GNOME])

Reports to: School Principal

FTE: 0.5

OVERVIEW:

The dynamic, inspired, and cheerful, outdoor educator and expert gardener will be leading groups of K-2 students and staff in hands-on learning and doing, in: organic and native gardening and tree planting, multi-arts including digital media, literacy and nutrition projects, as well as leading students in researching local ecology, history, watersheds, and existing local community, including its natural, multicultural, and built resources.

This is a part-time position that offers critical support to teachers and students to ensure that the school maximizes the educational potential of the school landscape. You will be leading gardening, and related ecology, nutrition, and arts activities as standards-based learning processes. You will be communicating about sustainability, ecological systems and native landscapes as well as performing community outreach activities with children and adults in ways that are fun, educational, and relevant. You will provide professional development training for staff, act as a resource for teachers as they plan their own cross-curricular lessons in the outdoor classroom, and model skills that teachers need to feel comfortable using the garden to teach science standards.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Delivers an integrated, standards-aligned course of study in environmental science, nutrition, and multi-arts, adapting core subject matter for grades K-2.
Develops differentiated lesson plans and instructional materials for individualized or small-group settings, ensuring curriculum meets the specific needs of each pupil.
Works collaboratively with grade-level teams and specialists to align garden activities with state standards and address specific student learning difficulties.
Prepares schedules, garden-based lesson plans, and seating charts for use by guest teachers.
Manages the school garden (planting, maintenance, harvesting) while creating an outdoor "learning atmosphere" that meets students' physical and psychological needs.
Maintains management and control of students in all locations; develops and enforces discipline rules that prioritize student safety and the protection of school property.
Selects, requisitions, and inventories all garden tools, instructional aids, and materials.
Manages the garden time schedule for other teachers and facilitates co-teaching opportunities to build school-wide outdoor management skills.
Evaluates academic and social growth through permanent records and progress reports, maintaining strict student confidentiality.
Establishes regular lines of communication with parents and administrators regarding student progress, needs, or behavioral difficulties.
Implements Board policies and administrative regulations; reports safety incidents immediately to maintain a positive environment.
Attends all required staff meetings and maintains professional competence through school-provided in-service training and self-selected workshops.
Coordinates community volunteers for student action projects; orchestrates community garden days and school-wide "Garden-to-Table" lunches to foster engagement and improve student outcomes.
Maintains the school garden blog to document activities and student participation for the community.
Monitors, documents and reports on all activities and extent of student and teacher participation.
Maintains a learning atmosphere by creating an effective environment for learning to meet the physical and psychological requirements of the students.
Perform such other duties and assumes such other responsibilities as may be assigned by the Principal/Designee
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Bachelor’s degree (B.A./B.S.) required. Preference for candidates with a multidisciplinary background in Science, Environmental Studies, or the Arts.
Deep familiarity with organic gardening, Arizona native species, and a nuanced understanding of Phoenix ecology and watershed systems.
A highly evolved design sensibility. Proficiency in traditional drawing and digital media is preferred. Candidates with carpentry skills, video production experience, or a strong portfolio in graphic design (e.g., flyer and promotional asset creation) will be highly prioritized.
Strong writing, research, and verbal communication skills.
A proactive "can-do" attitude; ability to function as a strong team teacher while remaining receptive to administrative direction.
Agility: A self-starter who remains resourceful and flexible in a fast-paced environment.
Demonstrated success working effectively with diverse populations, including both youth and adult stakeholders.
Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects independently.
Proficient in standard office software and social media management; ability to leverage digital platforms for organizational outreach.
Willingness to engage in the physical requirements of garden maintenance and outdoor instruction.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Significant standing, walking, moving, climbing, carrying, bending, kneeling, crawling, reaching, handling, pushing, and pulling. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential tasks. Must be able to do physical gardening work and be able to lift 40 lbs.
