About the Role

We have an exciting permanent opportunity, a Pasifika Oranga role to join the Te Manawa Taki regional team. Based within community settings, the Pasifika Oranga role is integral to building sustainable, long-term partnerships with a range of Pacific Peoples and community groups. With a dedication to seeing communities thrive, you will partner to deliver initiatives that eliminate health inequity and realise Pae Ora. This position will work proactively with the Samoan, Cook Islands Māori, Tongan, Niuean, Fijian, Tokelauan, Tuvaluan, and Kiribati and other Pacific communities in Te Manawa Taki, and works to meet the obligations of the special relationship under Te Tiriti o Waitangi. This position will be confident and agile working from Pacific systems worldview, whilst also drawing on non-pacific approaches to deliver on Ola Manuia.

This role is an active connector between NPHS and Pacific Peoples which provides a trusted conduit for Pacific Peoples and their communities to share feedback on service delivery, issues or opportunities for improvement. The role also provides a channel to share how feedback from Pacific Peoples and community has been adopted.

About the Team/Service/ Location

The National Public Health Service (NPHS) within Health New Zealand - Te Whatu Ora, work towards Pae Ora (healthy futures) for all by engaging with the wider determinants that impact people's health, focusing on oranga/wellbeing, prevention, protection, and population-level intervention. We are connected across boundaries to deliver public health services that are nationally planned, regionally delivered and locally tailored.

About you

You will foster meaningful connections with Pacific communities, enhancing workforce capabilities, and promoting a deep understanding of Pacific cultures. Your expertise will be in championing Pacific equity in various initiatives, projects and services and you will believe in the power of collaboration to create positive change. Our team is dedicated to ensuring that pacific voices are heard and valued in the realm of public health – across disease prevention, health promotion and health protection activities. Lived experience or significant experience working alongside underserved communities (e.g.: Tangata Whaikaha, aiga with experience in the Justice System, rural communities, transitional housing, LGBTQIA+
Knowledge and understanding of Pacific cultural protocols, values, history and stories and/or a willingness to develop this
Competence in at least one Pacific language
Ability to coach and guide others in approaching Pacific people in a health literate, client-centred way that takes into account the practicalities of people's lives
Established relationship with Pacific leaders in the area you will be working
Basic technology skills and a willingness to learn new systems
Written communication skills (e.g.: email writing, note taking)
A commitment to upholding Te Tiriti o Waitangi and anti-racism practice
Clean full NZ Driver Licence
Willingness to travel across the region
