Position Overview
Ensign Partners is seeking a highly organized and detail-oriented Payroll & Accounting Specialist to support two critical functions within our firm:
Client-Facing Payroll Advisory & Compliance
Accounting Review & Internal Quality Control
This role blends client interaction with technical accounting oversight and is ideal for someone who enjoys solving problems, working directly with clients on payroll matters, and ensuring accounting work is accurate and reliable behind the scenes.
You will collaborate closely with our employee benefits team, including employment law, insurance, and retirement specialists, along with our accounting team to deliver high-quality, integrated service to our clients.
This is a full-time, in-office position, Monday through Friday.
Key Responsibilities- Payroll Advisory & Compliance
Serve as a primary point of contact for clients on payroll-related matters
Respond to IRS and state payroll notices, including 941 issues, SUTA, withholding, and related matters
Assist clients with payroll system transitions, new payroll setups, implementations, and payroll compliance issues
Apply for and manage state payroll tax accounts and registrations
Review payroll setups for accuracy, including tax registrations, rates, and classifications
Collaborate with internal specialists across employment law, benefits, insurance, and retirement services
Provide proactive recommendations to improve payroll processes and compliance
Note: This role does not involve running payroll or processing payroll cycles.
Accounting Review & Team Support
Review bookkeeping and accounting work for accuracy, completeness, and consistency
Ensure financial statements are clean and prepared for tax planning and advisory work
Identify errors, inconsistencies, and opportunities for improvement
Provide feedback and guidance to team members to help elevate overall quality
Support the Accounting Manager in maintaining quality control standards
Assist in improving internal processes and workflows
Qualifications
5+ years of experience in Payroll and Accounting/Bookkeeping
Strong understanding of payroll tax concepts, including 941, SUTA, withholding, and related payroll compliance matters
Strong understanding of financial statements and bookkeeping workflows
Experience with payroll platforms such as Gusto, ADP, Paylocity, or similar systems
Strong communication skills and ability to work directly with clients
High attention to detail and strong problem-solving abilities
Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, professional environment
