People Operations Lead

💰 $3,800 - $6,080 (Est.) 📍 Auckland

Job Description

At Halter, we’re on a mission to enable farmers and graziers to run the most productive and sustainable operations. Our customers are using Halter to break free from the time-intensive constraints of conventional practices. Imagine watching 500 cattle stand up and walk calmly towards their next break? No quad bikes, no dogs, no fences. Just a group of cattle walking at their own pace. People say it looks like magic. Our customers are revolutionizing grazing with Halter. It's changing lives and transforming an industry. People join Halter to do meaningful work. By joining us you’ll be solving challenging problems within a talented team and a culture built for high performance. Our team out-think, out-work and out-care. We’re committed to delivering real change in the world - this isn’t easy, and in truth, we love that it’s hard.

We’re backed to deliver on a mission that matters by Tier 1 investors including Bessemer Venture Partners, DCVC, Blackbird, Promus Ventures, Rocket Lab’s Peter Beck and Icehouse ventures.

At Halter, we’re building world-class virtual fencing technology that transforms the way farmers and ranchers work. We tackle complex, real-world problems with technical solutions, helping farmers lift productivity, care for their animals, and farm more sustainably.

Being office first is a core pillar of our culture. We believe in-person connections are key to driving your own growth, learning, impact, and building genuine long-lasting relationships. Strong relationships make it easier to disagree, give feedback, and do meaningful and aligned work. We don’t like having heaps of rules or policies, but this means having strong, trusted relationships is critical.

We’re office first, not office only. This means working from the office everyday is our default setting, but we flex when we need to. We have a high-trust culture, so everyone is trusted to do what’s best for Halter.

Our office vibe is something special, it’s hard to describe until you’re here, but people at Halter who have come from fully remote or hybrid companies say they could never go back - the high energy and spectacular people they are now surrounded by everyday makes work so enjoyable. Your growth, your learning and your impact is truly unlimited here, and a big part of that comes from being together solving problems, innovating, building context, and constantly learning from each other.

About this role:

We’re a high-growth startup with increasingly global and distributed teams across NZ, Australia, and the US. This is a unique and rare People Operations role in a fast-scaling company, with big ambitions and expectations for continued, significant growth. Our pace of growth, particularly across our people, is what makes this role interesting and challenging. We need to continue building and evolving systems that underpin a workforce growing quickly, across locations, and that reflect our ambitions to bring a human, yet data-driven approach to our people operations and approach to performance.

As our People Operations Lead, you’ll build and manage the central systems and workflows that underpin our people, ensuring accuracy, efficiency, and scalability across People & Performance, Finance, and IT. This is a critical role, working cross-functionally across Halter to build and maintain systems that create clarity, unlock people and performance, enable speed and confidence, and deliver meaningful, accurate people insights.

This role is the single source of truth for people systems, enabling reliable and insightful reporting, compliant processes, and smooth employee lifecycle management as Halter continues to scale globally.

Key Responsibilities:

Core People Systems & Workflows: Design, build, and continuously improve core people systems that underpin our workforce.

Deliver system upgrades and workflows that improve efficiency, clarify ownership, and limit human error.

Cross-Functional Systems & Data Flow: Work closely with People & Performance, Finance, and IT to align people systems and workflows.

Drive system changes that impact multiple teams, proactively managing downstream impacts. Shape scalable joiner, mover, leaver, and compensation workflows with clear ownership across teams.

Communication & Engagement: Drive pragmatic stakeholder engagement to reach high-quality outcomes efficiently.

Communicate system changes and improvements clearly to build shared understanding and engagement

People Data & Insights. Unlock trusted, accurate people reporting.

Design systems that support holistic insights across the employee lifecycle

Other responsibilities from time to time that come with holding a generalist role in a lean, fast-moving company

We’re looking for someone who:

Has proven experience standing up core, centralised software systems that underpin day-to-day operations. You might have stood up a CRM in RevOps, built out martech in Marketing, or owned another mission-critical platform

Has experience partnering with stakeholders to understand their needs and design systems that drive outcomes and adoption

Starts with the human problem first, not the system. You want to understand how people actually work, where friction exists, and what’s getting in the way - then design the right solution, not the other way around

Is a simplifier. You’re known for untangling complexity, and you get more excited about removing a step than adding one

Operates from first principles rather than relying on “best practice.” You break problems apart, identify root causes, and design solutions that address the core challenges

Brings a structured, detail-oriented approach, while staying pragmatic and outcomes-focused

Loves driving efficiency

Is an engaging, clear communicator. You know the best systems and workflows are useless if no one understands or adopts them. You design and communicate with adoption in mind
