The Nova Scotia SPCA is hiring a storyteller and communicator who can engage with the communities we serve to support our mission.

The Nova Scotia SPCA is a registered charity dedicated to aiding companion animals in need throughout Nova Scotia. Thanks to the generous support of our donors and clients, we supported nearly 24,000 pets in 2026 through animal welfare efforts, innovative programs, and rehoming initiatives.

The Nova Scotia SPCA Philanthropy Communications Officer is creative, collaborative, and detail-oriented with experience in producing, coordinating, and disseminating communications and marketing materials that contribute to revenue development.

The Philanthropy Communications Officer plays a central role in communicating the SPCA’s vision and values to the public and informing them about programs and events. Critical to this position is understanding storytelling, being comfortable on camera, and confident in outreach by phone and in person. Reporting to the Chief Communications & Marketing Officer, this position will work in a team with leads responsible for fundraising, marketing and communications.

The ideal candidate is a great communicator and collaborator who is eager to learn and gain hands-on experience in marketing, communications, and fundraising. They enjoy working in a fast-paced, creative environment, thrive at meeting deadlines, and adapt readily to change. With the ability to guide projects to stay on target with key audiences, they excel at writing in plain language that is easy to understand, engaging, and tailored to the audience in a relevant and consistent voice and tone.

Responsibilities

The responsibilities of the Philanthropy Communications Officer include, but are not limited to:

Manage and create engaging content for social media and the SPCA website, oversee online advertising, and produce podcasts. Collaborate on marketing materials, coordinate recurring projects and multimedia production, update marketing plans, and provide regular analytics and status reports.
Lead the Nova Scotia SPCA Raffle, driving engagement and fundraising outcomes including third-party fundraising events and initiatives. Support and recommend new fundraising opportunities, including supporting digital fundraising. Work closely with the Development team to ensure fundraising content is relevant, compelling, and aligned with appeals and broader communications
Manage and cultivate partnerships with community groups, organizations, and other stakeholders to advance the SPCA’s mission and strategic priorities

You are a great communicator and collaborator with experience making content
Want to learn more and get hands-on experience in marketing, communications and fundraising
Enjoys working in a fast-paced, creative environment and thrives at meeting deadlines and adapting to change
Excited to guide projects to stay on target with key audiences
Write in plain language, is easy to understand, engaging, audience-tailored, in a relevant and consistent voice and tone
Good judgement can prioritize and organize their workload, and can work independently.
A diploma in Communications or a related field from a recognized post-secondary institution is an asset
Experience working in a non-profit and/or customer service role
Web-based certifications in Google Analytics, MailChimp, etc, would be an asset

Hours of Work:
Work responsibilities require a minimum of 32 hours per week plus additional hours as required to fulfill the duties associated with the position. The schedule requires flexibility and evenings and weekends will occasionally be required.
