Instruction
The primary job required of an Oak Mountain Academy teacher is classroom instruction. Instruction includes daily classes that adhere to the curriculum and Mission of the Academy. The teacher will be required to become familiar with and follow the SAIS/SACS Accreditation Standards.
Assessment
In addition to classroom instruction, a teacher must also assess student performance. This assessment is done through studying progress reports tests, and general observation. Teachers must be prepared to give a comprehensive assessment to the student as appropriate, the student's parents or guardians, and school administrators. The elements included in assessment are expectations, progress, and goals.
Preparation
The teacher officially works 175 days a year, with additional planning days and preparation before and after the school year begins and ends. In addition, most are required to attend number of workshops and teacher conferences throughout the year to enhance instruction and personal growth. The school day is eight hours in length, but it is important for teachers to understand the need to work outside the official school day as they plan for classes, provide extra help for students, conference with parents, and support extra-curricular activities and events.
The bulk of the teacher's job takes place inside the classroom during instruction, but teachers must also expect to engage in extra-classroom responsibilities. Teachers may be called upon to monitor student behavior outside the classroom. In addition, teachers must become acquainted with proper procedures for student behavior, student concerns, fire drills, extreme weather situations, and crisis management.
Extracurricular Duties
Teachers may be called upon to sponsor a team or club. Alternatively, all teachers can expect to be involved in group meetings with other members of the faculty and may be asked to serve on faculty-led committees. Teachers are expected to communicate often with parents and meet with them as needed.
