Commercial Plumber
Contract Type: Full Time, Permanent
Location: RAF Croughton/ RAF Barford St Johns
Working Hours: 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday
Salary: Upto £32,000 dependent on experience

About the role:
You will be responsible for carrying out maintenance, repairs, and minor works on domestic plumbing systems, including married family housing and dormitories, ensuring all activity is completed efficiently and safely in line with our service standards. The role includes scheduled preventative maintenance and urgent reactive tasks across RAF Croughton and RAF Barford St Johns.
As a Plumber, you will work closely with on-site supervisors and a wider team of skilled professionals. Daily tasks will be assigned using a tablet or paper-based instruction which you will then travel to in your provided company van and you will be expected to complete documentation accurately and in a timely manner.
What you will need;
We are looking for candidates with recognised plumbing qualifications or at least three years of relevant experience. A solid understanding of health and safety practices, including COSHH and RIDDOR, is essential. You must hold a full UK driving licence and be eligible to obtain Security Clearance at the SC level. Strong communication skills, reliability, and the ability to work independently are key qualities we value. You must be happy to lone work, as this role will be predominantly lone working.
Desirable but not required attributes include experience with mechanical or electrical systems in commercial environments, previous work within the MOD, and qualifications in first aid or health and safety.

Permanent position
• This role will be working within live, occupied Category B and C prisons
• Please be aware that you will be required to undertake a full prison vetting and enhanced DBS check
• Start times will be subject to vetting lead times (typically 3–4 weeks)

We are working in partnership with a national maintenance contractor to recruit a permanent Plumber to deliver a combination of Planned Preventive Maintenance (PPM) and reactive plumbing repairs across a portfolio of occupied prison environments in Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, and Northamptonshire.
This is a mobile, field-based role offering a secure long-term career opportunity with a well-established contractor, supported by ongoing training and development. You’ll be working across several prison sites, carrying out maintenance works in live settings such as cell blocks, shower rooms, education facilities, canteens, and communal areas.
You will be responsible for ensuring water systems remain safe, compliant and fully operational — while delivering a professional, security-conscious service.
Important good to knows
• All applicants will need to pass a security vetting and enhanced DBS check
• Mobile phones and personal items will not be permitted beyond prison gate security
• All tools, equipment and materials will be signed in/out daily and moved securely between locations
• You will be working in occupied, live environments, and must be comfortable working in and around prison staff and inmates
• You will be part of a supported estates team with a daily access schedule, working closely with prison facilities leads
Key elements of the role and your responsibilities
• Carry out Planned Preventive Maintenance (PPM) across prison water and heating systems
• Deliver a reactive repair service – diagnosing faults and completing plumbing-related maintenance
• Maintain and repair pipework, toilets, basins, urinals, showers, hot/cold feeds, and heating circuits
• Support water hygiene requirements including temperature checks, flushing and TMV maintenance
• Ensure work is carried out in accordance with Water Regulations and Health & Safety protocols
• Complete minor associated works as needed – making good, minor sealing, tiling, etc.
• Record works completed using mobile device or job sheet systems (training provided)
• Liaise with prison maintenance managers and security staff to access and complete planned works
What you need to bring to the role
• Qualified Plumber / Plumbing & Heating Engineer with proven PPM and reactive repair experience
• Recognised qualifications – City & Guilds or NVQ Level 2/3 in Plumbing or Heating
• Good knowledge of building services, water hygiene, and basic multi-trade repairs
• Experience working in secure or regulated environments such as prisons, hospitals, MOD or education
• Valid CSCS card or H&S awareness certification
• UK Driving Licence – van provided
• Strong communication, fault-finding and problem-solving skills
• Willingness to complete prison clearance and vetting process
