Under the general supervision of a superintendent or lead personnel, the Plumber performs a variety of skilled tasks in connection with the installation, maintenance and repair of plumbing systems and related equipment for the University owned Residence Halls, Apartments, Dining Commons and related buildings to accomplish the operational needs of the department
In compliance with H&RS goals and objectives, affirms, and implements the department Educational Equity Plan comprised of short and long term objectives that reflect a systematic approach to preparing both students and staff for success in a multicultural society
Works in an environment, which ethnically diverse and culturally pluralistic
Works effectively in a team environment
Hours and schedule may vary to meet the operational needs of the department
80% Technical - Performs skilled mechanical maintenance work in the repair, installation and alteration of plumbing systems and related equipment and facilities
Designs, redesigns, assembles, installs, troubleshoots, repairs and maintains pipes, fittings and fixtures of water, gas, waste, storm drainage, steam, hydronic heating systems, building fire sprinkler systems, compressed air lines, pneumatic air lines, water and gas pressure regulators and meters and irrigation/sprinkler systems
Cuts and threads pipe using pipe cutters, cutting torch and pipe threading machines
Installs new and or modifies existing plumbing systems to incorporate energy management controls and sensors
Inspects, repairs and installs back flow prevention devices
Installs, overhauls and repairs air compressors, pumps and related components and equipment
Assembles valves, pipe fittings, and pipes composed of metals, such as iron, steel, brass, copper and lead and non-metals such as ABS, PVC and vitrified clay
Joins pipe by use of screws, bolts, fittings or solder, and caulk joints
Performs pipe welding, soldering and brazing as required utilizing propane, oxy/acetylene, mapp and other industrial gases
Inspects and maintains steam and hot water boilers
Installs, repairs and maintains plumbing fixtures such as sinks, commodes, water heaters, hot water tanks, garbage disposal units, dishwashers and commercial food cooking equipment
Responsible with the ground shop for installation, repair and maintenance of all irrigation lines, including reclaimed water lines and hydraulic sprinkler controls
Cleaning and maintenance of sewer systems
Repairs of under slab water and drain lines
Cleans and maintains grease interceptors
Performs preventative maintenance on valves, traps, heat exchangers and related plumbing equipment
Ability to work from blueprints and schematics and to make working drawings
Make computations related to pressure, flow and size of pipe required
10% General Duties - Instructs or leads skilled, semi-skilled assistants
Complies with the department safety program as implemented by the supervisor
Researches and orders materials needed to complete work orders
Generates and closes out computerized work orders
Utilizes hand-held radio to communicate with dispatcher, supervisor and co-workers
Performs a variety of other skilled and unskilled tasks outside of assigned trade in support of the DLG Maintenance Shop and the Santa Ynez Service Center that includes weekend pager duty and occasional overtime required to meet the operational needs of the department
Participates in training programs, including safety and professional development
Promotes customer service environment to residents/clients
Assists with the development and maintenance of a work environment, which is conducive to meeting the mission of the organization and supports the EEP
