Serves as a Plumber of the Structural Unit of Maintenance and Operation section with Facilities Management Services, at the James A
Performs installation, replacement, modification, preventive maintenance and repair on variety of plumbing systems
Works from building plans, blueprints, and sketches to plan and lay out the routing, placement, slant, slope, fall of systems and equipment
Operate tools and equipment such as plumb bobs, mercury gauges, dividers etc
Makes coupled or flanged connections
Inspects and tests each installation, using hydrostatic pump
Determines and installs valves, traps, and unions needed for the proper operation of systems
Makes periodic visual inspections on mechanical piping system
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 7:00 am to 3:30 pm
Physical Requirements: Incumbent makes repairs and installations for ladders, scaffolding, and platforms, and where the systems and equipment worked on are in hard to reach places
Incumbent frequently stands, stoops, bends kneels, climbs and works in tiring and uncomfortable positions
Incumbent frequently handles, lifts, carries, and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to (50 pounds)
Occasionally, lifts and carry items that weigh over (50 pounds) with help
Working Conditions: Incumbent will work within the medical facility's operating functions and must use all appropriate safety tools and clothing, etc
to protect himself/herself, other staff, visitors and patients
Other assignments can be in remote areas such as sub-basement, machinery rooms, rooftops, roads and walkways
Work is done inside and outside, and is usually dirty, dusty, and greasy and may contain asbestos or in areas where bed smelling fumes are present which may require respirator and will include working with flammable and toxic liquids
Works off ladders and scaffolds
Outside work will entail exposure to variety of weather conditions
Incumbent frequently exposed to the possibility of uncomfortable heat conditions, live steam, and hot pipes
Working in damp places
In and under buildings containing asbestos;
In close quarters and inside and outside;
Infection from unsanitary work sites such as sewers, grease traps and waste traps
Injury while using power operated pipe threaders and bending machines;
Bums form hot water and steam;
Broken bones, cuts and bruises while working with wrenches and heavy pipes;
Abnormal heat while working on steam lines;
Working around neuropsychiatry, TB patients and patients with other possible communicable diseases
Incumbent must always be aware of safety hazards and know what action should be taken to avoid them
He/she must observe all local and National Safety Codes
Incumbent must know and comply with all the safety factors of the trade to prevent fires and injury to patients and personnel
Incumbent must wear respirator and disposable clothing including coveralls and covers for head, hands and feet when working in areas of possible asbestos decontamination
Work assignments involve a through knowledge of hazardous material handling and related activities
Incumbent is required to successfully complete a variety of hazardous material classes
There is a possibility of exposure to hazardous chemicals and fumes from spills and/or leaks and incumbent may be required to wear protective clothing (e.g., rubber boots, coveralls, goggles, aprons, gloves respirator, etc.)

Summary

Serves as a Plumber of the Structural Unit of Maintenance and Operation section with Facilities Management Services, at the James A. Haley, Veterans Hospital, at Tampa Florida. This Facility is a highly active, modern hospital that includes Medical, Surgical, Spinal Cord, Psychiatric and Nursing home Services.

In addition to the hospital itself, support services are provided to outpatient clinics, as well as Veterans Centers.
