The office of Zali Steggall MP is seeking applications for a full-time ongoing Policy Adviser, based in the Zali Steggall’s Electorate Office in Manly, NSW or Ministerial Office in Australian Parliament House in Canberra, ACT.

This is an exciting opportunity to work with Zali on policy and strategic goals, including advising on legislation, stakeholder relations and parliamentary business.
You will play a pivotal role in analysing and evaluating upcoming legislation to provide insightful feedback and propose necessary amendments.
The ideal candidate will ideally have a legal qualification or background, as well as experience in policy analysis and drafting. This role would be well suited to a senior associate lawyer, looking to make a move into policy work.
As Policy Adviser, you will have a passion for community led politics, climate action, and integrity. You will have also a keen interest in understanding and supporting the issues and opportunities throughout the Warringah Electorate.
The key duties of the position are, but are not limited to:
Oversee and develop the analysis, brief preparation, response, speeches and amendments to government legislation with the policy volunteer team;
Oversee and develop drafting and management of motions, private member’s bills and any other parliamentary instrument;
Coordinate and communicate on staff meetings, including meeting agendas and minutes;
Advise on and attend meetings with Zali;
Liaise with community groups, business groups and constituents on issues that affect the electorate.
The ideal applicant should possess the following skills, qualifications, and experience:
A minimum of a Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline, legal or public policy studies preferable;
A minimum of 2-4 years' experience in policy development, research and/or Parliamentary affairs (or similar);
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills;
Ability to work independently and as part of a team;
Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines;
Excellent oral and written communication skills with attention to detail;
Well-developed IT skills including word processing, spreadsheets and database management;
Excellent organisational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritise and manage multiple and competing work tasks in a fast-paced working environment.
Employment conditions:
The position is offered under the Members of Parliament (Staff) Act 1+84 and conditions are outlined in the Commonwealth Members of Parliament Staff Enterprise Agreement 2020-23 (soon to be updated by a new Enterprise Agreement 2024-2027).
An employer superannuation contribution of 15.4% will be payable
An initial probationary period of three months will apply and may be subject to extension.
The successful applicant may be required to undergo a National Police History Check.
