Exports & Veterinary Services Division
Canberra, ACT
Join ESB as a Policy Officer and help shape the future of Australian agriculture. Use your expertise to influence and protect Australia’s international trade and support global food safety standards. You will be working on topical issues, critical for future exports of Australian animal products.
Why YOU are important to us and what impact will you have on the Exports and Veterinary Services Division and the departments’ goal.
We make sure Australian exports meet international standards through inspections, audits and certifications. Our work helps expand trade by negotiating technical access for food and other products. We also manage quotas under trade agreements and represent Australia in setting global food standards.
We help Australian producers get their goods—like meat, dairy, and seafood—into overseas markets by negotiating trade conditions and maintaining clear export requirements. We also shape international food standards, support digital certification, and work with global partners to keep trade flowing smoothly and safely.
work on topical issues, critical for the future exports of Australian animal products
provide specialist advice and guidance on matters relating to animal health, biosecurity and food safety
contribute to strategic advice to safeguard Australia’s reputation as a trusted exporter and help maintain access to billions of dollars in global trade.
This is where you play an important role.
As a Policy Officer, your duties will include but are not limited to:
providing technical or specialist advice on animal health, biosecurity and food safety matters
addressing topical issues critical to the future export of Australian animal products, including meat and meat products, and inedible animal products/by-products
liaising and negotiating with government agencies, industry bodies and stakeholders to support technical market access
conducting research and preparing technical submissions and briefings for market access negotiations
representing the department in engagements with international trading partners and Australian industry
contributing to high-level advice for senior executives and the Minister on animal health-related matters
providing input into the development of international food trade standards
investigating and responding to trade disruptions through targeted research.
Please note:
Positions are available in following sections:
The Meat Market Access – Asia and Oceania section negotiates with trading partners to maintain, improve, or develop new market access for the export of edible meat and meat products in the Asia and Oceania region. The team negotiates agreed conditions of trade, facilitates bilateral engagement with international trading partner authorities, assists in the coordination and organisation of audits of Australia’s export meat system and establishments, develops Australian positions on international standard setting for trade in meat and meat products, and delivers content for the department’s Manual of Importing Country Requirements.
Animal Inedible Products Market Access section contributes to strategies and trade negotiations with international trading partners to maintain, improve and develop new market access for trade in Australian inedible animal products, such as rendered products (meat and bone meals, tallows and biofuels), pet food, skins and hides, wool, pharmaceuticals and technical products. This team engages closely with the World Organisation for Animal Health standards and guidelines and delivers content for the department’s Manual for Importing Country Requirements.
This recruitment process will initially be used to fill several ongoing (permanent) vacancies in the section.
The merit pool established through this selection process, which is valid for a period of eighteen months from the date the vacancy was advertised in the Public Service Gazette, may also be used to fill future ongoing vacancies in the branch where the duties are of a similar nature.
Our ideal candidate will have:
a strong understanding of Australia’s food safety and/or animal health systems
experience in agricultural trade or trade management
knowledge of export legislation and its application to agricultural industries
familiarity with legislative frameworks and government decision-making processes
the ability to present complex information clearly and be a strategic thinker
effective time and team management skills with a focus on quality and deadlines
a proven ability to manage competing priorities under pressure
skills in building and maintaining stakeholder relationships
a results-driven mindset and be a proactive problem-solver
excellent written and verbal communication skills together with the ability to brief senior stakeholders
the ability to research, analyse and prepare accurate, science-based technical reports.
