Job Description
Reporting to the Construction Foreman, PLT Apprentices assist in the installation and inspection of electrical distribution facilities, drive and operate line trucks, operate associated equipment, and perform other miscellaneous duties as required. We are open to new Apprentices who are registered with an applicable Provincial Apprenticeship program as well as Apprentices Level One through Four who are looking to continue their journey towards their Journeyperson Powerline Technician Certificate.
Please Note: This position is based in Central Ontario, and candidates must reside locally or within a reasonable commuting distance.
Duties and Responsibilities
Work with a Journeyperson Powerline Technician and gain hours towards obtaining Journeyperson Certificate
Climb and work from heights and parallel to energized circuits
Erect and maintain poles, towers and guy wires
Splice, solder and insulate conductors and related wiring to connect power distribution networks
Open and close switches and install grounding devices to lines and equipment
May climb poles and/or ride in bucket to install or repair wires, arms, insulators or other hardware on poles
Install and repair underground facilities such as cable, transformers, potheads and pedestals
Install pole hardware and auxiliary equipment such as transformers, lightning arresters, switches, fuses and insulators, using hand tools and mechanical devices
May cover energized lines with rubber goods to facilitate safe handling of high-voltage lines without interrupting service
Use insulated poles (hot sticks) fitted with mechanically or hydraulically operated grasping and crimping tools and/or rubber gloves and sleeves to perform energized line work
Requirements
Must be enrolled, or eligible to enroll, as a PLT apprentice with the Ontario Apprenticeship and Trade Certification Commission
Valid Driver’s License and ability to provide an acceptable Drivers Abstract
Willingness to work away from home and work a variety of shifts
Knowledge of trade safety practices, procedures and safety requirements
Preferred Skills / Qualifications
Level One, Two, Three or Four Powerline Technician Apprentice
This project will be a unionized worksite. Candidates must be willing to join Canadian Union of Skilled Workers (CUSW)
