Help shape safer, more connected communities in Manurewa. Auckland Council is looking for a passionate and community-minded Proactive Animal Management Officer to join our team in a fixed-term role until 19 September 2026 with a unique proactive focus in the Manurewa area.


He angitūtanga: The opportunity
In this role, you’ll be proactively working to reduce dog related harm in the Manurewa area by carrying out intelligence-led patrols, engaging in targeted initiatives with a focus on menacing/dangerous dogs, and becoming a known and respected representative of Animal Management within the Manurewa community —while working under the Dog Control Act 1996 and Council policies.


What makes this role unique is its proactive component: you’ll work closely with the Manurewa community to reduce dog-related harm, promote responsible ownership, and deliver targeted education and engagement initiatives. Expect to participate in community events, public speaking, and collaborative outreach.


This is a variable 24/7 rostered role, including morning and evening shifts. The role is based in Manukau and covers the Manurewa Local Board area.

You’re a conscientious, culturally aware individual who thrives in public-facing roles.

You bring:

Strong customer service and conflict resolution skills
Confidence handling aggressive dogs and de-escalating tense situations
Public speaking and community engagement experience
Local knowledge of Manurewa and a passion for positive outcomes
A full, clean NZ driver’s licence
