About the National Measurement Institute
The National Measurement Institute (NMI) is the Australian Government’s national measurement authority. Australians rely on measurement every day to stay safe and healthy, to be confident they get what they pay for, and to level the playing field for business. NMI’s sovereign measurement capabilities underpin these outcomes for Australians, contributing to a Future Made in Australia and maintaining national and international confidence in Australian goods and services. Our work spans the economy, delivering over $800 million annually in direct benefits to Australians and Australian industry. NMI also administers the regulatory framework for measurement which supports around $1.4 trillion of economic activity in Australia each year. NMI is an integral part of Australia’s critical scientific infrastructure, supporting the government’s objectives in a wide range of sectors, including in manufacturing, health, food safety, trade, the environment, defence, energy, the integrity of sport and law enforcement.

The opportunity
There are multiple ongoing and non-ongoing positions available at the NMI at the APS4 and APS5 level to support NMI’s ongoing operations and strategic priorities.

NMI received $145 million in the 2026-25 Federal Budget to deliver significant upgrades across ICT, laboratory assets and property, and we are seeking procurement officers with an interest in delivering the many larger and smaller procurements that will support this.

You will be using your procurement expertise to support large scale replacement and upgrading of physical and scientific assets across the Division across multiple sites around Australia. The role may also involve travel to one or more NMI laboratories in Sydney or Melbourne to see measurement science in action. Your role will directly support NMI’s staff to deliver cutting edge science and essential regulatory activities.

There will be opportunities for personal development and for engagement with broader NMI and departmental activities and forums.

Our ideal candidate
Our ideal candidate will have:

an understanding of public sector administration is highly desirable, including some level of exposure or experience in procurement and contract management processes.
the ability to work in a team environment to support a wide cross section of managers including senior executives.
a strong motivation for learning and development with an interest in the activities of NMI and the role NMI plays for Australia.
an ability to assist with the drafting of tender documents, compiling tenders and quotes received and providing administrative assistance in finalising procurements.
the ability to co-ordinate the workflow and outcomes of a small procurement team is a desirable requirement.
the ability to make sound judgements and decision-making skills.
a track record of working successfully in a supportive team environment, including maintaining effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
good oral and written communication skills.
a willingness to learn, including being amenable to stretching beyond procurement activities to support other processes including, recruitment and other administrative activities, as required.
contemporary experience in using or administration of scientific equipment would be desirable – as examples, you may have a Diploma of Procurement & Contracting, or a degree in science, or experience in the administrative aspects of purchasing equipment for a university, research organisation, hospital, or commercial laboratory or manufacturer.
NMI is looking for procurement officers who can demonstrate our values of being adaptable, accountable, innovative, strategic, inclusive and influential, contributing strongly to a positive workplace culture. Ideal candidates will have personal drive and integrity in the context of the APS values, and code of conduct.

Our department has a commitment to inclusion and diversity, with an ambition of being the best possible place to work. This reflects the importance we place on our people and on creating a workplace culture where each and every one of us is valued and respected for our contribution. Our ideal candidate adds to this culture and our workplace in their own way.

What you will do
As a procurement officer in NMI, your role may include:

working with staff across NMI to support the timely completion of procurements, including by supporting the development of specifications and preparation of tender and contract documentation relating to property, ICT and scientific equipment.
liaising closely with DISR’s finance, procurement and legal areas to help ensure consistency in advice and to maintain compliance with departmental policies and legislative requirements.
working under limited supervision to coordinate and manage procurement and contract management processes and workflows end to end as a procurement team leader or procurement team member.
assisting the establishment, implementation, monitoring and review of contracts and managing risks as they emerge.
identification and implementation of process improvement initiatives relating to procurement to promote efficiencies whilst maintaining compliance within the procurement framework within a culture of continuous improvement.
under appropriate guidance, assisting with other administrative processes as required, including to support recruitment processes, project management, and tendering by NMI.
Eligibility
To be eligible for employment in the APS and the department, candidates must be Australian Citizens.

Positions require a Baseline security clearance and successful candidates will be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at this level.
