Primary Purpose: The Office of the Vice-Provost, Indigenous Engagement (OVPIE) is seeking a student program assistant to support the Building Intercultural Mentorship (BIRM) program and the Indigenous Summer Institute.

The OVPIE works within and outside the university to meet the unique needs of Indigenous students, staff, faculty and communities and uplift Indigenization by advancing initiatives and strategies that promote Indigenous Knowledges and supports reconciliation and decolonization. The BIRM program provides support to Indigenous high school students in Saskatoon Public Schools to engage in leadership opportunities, career exploration, goal setting, learning Indigenous cultures and languages, land-based experiences, and developing academic skills. The program assistant will be expected to assist the OVPIE Program Coordinator and the BIRM Director in the implementation, ongoing documentation and assessment, and delivery of programming.

Duties:

In the appointment of BIRM / OVPIE Program Assistant, your general duties and responsibilities will be as follows:

Support project organization and administration under the BIRM Director and Program Coordinator
Support accounting/budgeting and processing payments
Assessing and interviewing potential BIRM program mentors
Note taking and documentation of programs during delivery as needed
Communication material development for social media, advertising, training, etc
Upkeep of website and social media sites
Work closely with staff in collection and organization of data
Supervising and supporting youth ages 14 to 18 during the Indigenous Summer Institute and atosketan summer work program; some evening and overnight supervision required
Supporting OVPIE events
Must be available for in person work duties during the following dates:
May 5, 7, 8, +, 26-31
June 1-6
July 3, 7-10, 14-17, 21-24, 28-31
August 25-2+
Can commit to supervising overnight during the week of August 10th to 16th, 2026.
Qualifications:

Education: Current USask student pursing a post-secondary degree (Bachelors’ Degree or higher) in a relevant field of study

Skills:

Proficient organizational and communication skills
Effective management of personal tasks, hours, milage, etc.
Confident presentation/facilitation skills
Experience with photo editing computer programs such as Canva, etc.
Experience using shared documents, drives, and sheets
Able to work independently and follow the directions of multiple supervisors
Innovative and creative thinker
Experience and understanding of Indigenous cultures and student need
Commitment to working with Indigenous youth
Must have a clear driving record and access to a vehicle and obtain a criminal record check with vulnerable sector.
