About Us

Established in 1+64, the Department of Computer Science at Western has developed strong academic and research programs to become one of the leading establishments in its field. Our faculty are the recipients of many teaching and research awards. Undergraduates can specialize in computer science and pick up a minor in gaming, software engineering, theoretical computer science and applications in computer science. Undergraduates in other disciplines can major or minor in computer science. There are many industrial and research opportunities for our undergraduate students.

Our department is active in both the traditional research areas of computer science and emerging areas. The quality and diversity of the Department's research activities is internationally recognized. The Department is supported with research grants from a number of sources including the Natural Sciences and Engineering Council (NSERC), Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI), Ontario Research Fund (ORF) and MITACS. Our researchers are involved in several collaborative initiatives both within the university and with external university and industrial partners.

Responsibilities

The Programmer-Analyst will be responsible for working with various customers to define, develop, test, analyze, and maintain software applications that address the University's project needs. The incumbent will provide support for the applications, and assist with planning for hardware and software enhancements to ensure the needs of faculty, staff and students are met. In addition, the incumbent will participate in short term planning of the delivery of programming services, with a focus on identifying opportunities for technological and process improvements. The Programmer-Analyst will ensure the latest techniques and strategies are used, and make recommendations to clients regarding the planning and delivery of services.

Qualifications

Education:
Diploma in Computer Sciences or related field; University degree in Computer Sciences or related field, or relevant software certification preferred

Experience:
2 years' experience with application development technologies and/or providing technical support for relational databases and operating systems; experience in an academic IT environment preferred

Skills, Abilities & Expertise:
In-depth knowledge of programming languages
Familiarity with system administration, including computer networks, operating systems, and applications software
Familiarity with project management tools and resources
Ability to adapt to change and master new technical and organizational concepts and processes
Ability and willingness to stay abreast of technological developments
Communication skills to describe technical concepts effectively to both novice and sophisticated users
Ability to write clear, concise and accurate procedural documentation
Ability to work in a manner that models best practices in confidentiality standards
Ability to provide solutions and ideas for improvement by using imaginative approaches where constructive thinking and innovation are required
Ability to understand customer needs and expectations and provide excellent customer service to directly and indirectly satisfy expectations
Ability to follow formal business practices with high attention to detail
Ability to work independently and effectively as a member of the team to achieve department goals
