Engage with Aboriginal people in custody in adult and youth justice facilities
Ongoing, Full time opportunity to work with a high-performing and passionate team in the Victorian Public Service
VPS 4: $97,955 - $111,142 plus superannuation
This is an Aboriginal designated position, classified under 'special measures' of section 12 of the Equal Opportunity Act 2010. Only Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people are eligible to apply.
The Aboriginal Health Unit is responsible for the design, implementation and evaluation of initiatives to strengthen Aboriginal health care within both adult and youth custodial settings.
This includes initiatives to:
enhance the cultural safety of health care services
ensure that health care services meet the needs of Aboriginal prisoners and young people, including through prioritising culture, cultural strengthening, addressing trauma and supporting healing
increase Aboriginal engagement with health care services.
About the role:
As the Aboriginal Policy and Projects Officer, you will be responsible for designing, implementing, and evaluating improvements in Aboriginal healthcare. The role will focus on progressing the principles of self-determination, co-design, and collaboration to strengthen healthcare outcomes and ensure culturally safe practices.
The position will also develop and maintain strategies to engage with Aboriginal people in custody and youth justice facilities. This includes gaining a clear understanding of their healthcare needs and experiences, addressing immediate issues, and ensuring their perspectives inform continuous improvements in healthcare within custodial settings.
This role requires frequent travel to Correctional and Youth Justice facilities.
About you
To be successful in this role, you will have:
Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the Aboriginal community, both society and culture, and the issues impacting it.
Demonstrated ability to communicate sensitively and work effectively with the Victorian Aboriginal community.
Well-developed analytical and conceptual skills, together with an ability to identify policy and program needs, investigate issues and undertake research within a complex human services environment.
Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills, and an ability to manage relationships with key internal and external stakeholders, including Aboriginal stakeholders.
