Overview

Interval House of Ottawa is a 30-bed emergency shelter for those fleeing ******** partner and family violence and their dependents, and is the only shelter in Ottawa that provides on-site housing for their pets.

Vacancy status

This job posting is for a temporary position beginning July 21 and ending March 31.

Position summary

Reporting to the Community Engagement & Development Manager, the Public Educator is part of the community engagement and development team. This role will build connections with and provide information and training to prevent gender-based violence (GBV) in various demographics and sectors including sports associations and clubs, including work with the Ottawa Redblacks, school boards, and school personnel including Principals, Vice Principals, Coaches, and teachers across Ontario. This is a key initiative for Interval House of Ottawa (IHO) since prevention work helps minimize the instances of GBV and will help IHO achieve our mission to create a community free from violence.

All candidates must demonstrate the ability to work within the values and basic beliefs of IHO with a commitment to intersectional feminist principles. They have a strong knowledge of the issues of violence against women (VAW) and gender-based violence (GBV) and a strong commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion and advancing equity and social justice in our community. They are flexible and understand the realities of working in a small non-profit where, at times, priorities shift to meet the needs of service users and ensure smooth operations. This means that we all pitch in and occasionally shovel snow, stuff envelopes, and mop the floor.

Some of the key responsibilities & duties

· Coordinate the MentorAction and Coaching Boys Into Men (CBIM) programs through partnership with the Ottawa Redblacks.

· Train/co-facilitate training for designated Ottawa Redblacks program ambassador players.

· Coordinate and attend “touchdowns” with designated Ottawa Redblacks ambassadors.

· Ensure that we have an adequate supply of education and advocacy materials in various accessible formats.

· Confidently lead GBV prevention training within various school and sport settings.

· Coordinate and liaise with school-based and sport settings across Ontario, particularly events including Ottawa Redblacks players.

· Attend in-season tabling opportunities at Ottawa Redblack games to promote and educate attendees on GBV prevention, CBIM and CLEAR (Coaching Leadership Equity and Respect).

· Identify training pathways and focus on establishing collaborative partnerships to assist in the implementation of provincial prevention programs (CBIM and CLEAR) with support from the community engagement team.

· Collect and analyze data to accurately monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of the training being provided.

· Produce evaluation reports of the programs identifying recommendations for improvements and sharing the factors that lead to its success.

· Work alongside program partners, school boards, teachers, coaches, facilitators, players and support volunteers and allies with the ongoing delivery of the established prevention program.

· Provide regular project reporting by collecting data on the progress of the project and its impacts for reporting to the Community Engagement & Development Manager and Interval House of Hamilton (IHOH).

· Ensure the program and all activities are delivered through an intersectional feminist lens and the expertise and voices of women and gender diverse folks are prioritized within the work.

· Attend and participate in all meetings, community meetings, committees, and related activities.

· Other related duties as assigned.

Education & experience

Minimum undergraduate degree/diploma in teacher education, social services, public relations, social justice, or a related discipline from a recognized university/college, or equivalent education and experience.
· Minimum 2 years of experience and proven record of success in outreach, education and networking.

· Skilled at networking, promotion and presentation work with various audiences at all levels of an organization.

· Exemplary communication and interpersonal skills.

· Keen ability and interest in working with and for diverse populations.

· Experience working in a politically sensitive environment.

· Resourceful, motivated and energetic.

· Highly organized and efficient at time management.

· Skilled in report writing and analytics.

· Maintains a high degree of accuracy and detail in their work.

· Adaptable, flexible, a creative problem solver, and autonomous worker.

· Additional certifications in instructor training and public education are an asset, focusing on both online/in-person training skills and competencies.

· Experience or certification in delivering the Coaching Boys Into Men (CBIM) program or similar, considered an asset.

· Involved in community sports as an athlete, coach or physical education teacher considered an asset

· Fully proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and other report-writing programs.

· Comfortable learning new technology; an understanding of website development and effective social media campaigns would be an asset.

· Ability to lift up to 40 lbs for various tasks.

· Ability to communicate fluently in spoken and written English. Ability to communicate in other languages is an asset.

Additional requirements

Valid driver’s license and access to an insured ($2 million insurance) vehicle or alternative ability to meet travel requirements.
· Valid CPR/First Aid certification.

· Original copy of a satisfactory Level 3 – Vulnerable Sector police record check.

· Staff may be required to interact with animals that are housed on-site.

Compensation & hours

Term to March 31, 2026.
$32.00 per hour, plus 4% pay in lieu of vacation.
35 hours per week.
This is a unionized position.
Primary hours of work are daytime, Monday to Friday with 2 to 3 evenings per week to accommodate coaches training and Redblacks events
· Must be available to work evenings and weekends as required.
