Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is the country's largest employer, delivering universal public healthcare to 5 million New Zealanders.
We provide essential hospital, specialist, and community health services across 80+ locations — from large urban centres to rural towns and remote communities.

Our goal is to improve health outcomes for all New Zealanders by delivering equitable, accessible and innovative care.

About the Role

This role sits within the Communicable Disease & Housing Team, supporting healthy housing and overall well-being. You'll work closely with kaumatua/whānau and partner agencies to provide clinical support, complete housing assessments, and develop tailored plans that help create warmer, drier, healthier homes.

You'll also advocate for kaumatua/whānau to ensure they receive the right housing interventions and build capability across the Wellington region by supporting health professionals and community organisations to recognise and respond to the health impacts of poor-quality housing.

This role is whānau-centred and equity-driven, working in partnership with Māori and Pacific communities to uphold Te Tiriti o Waitangi and champion Pae Ora. You'll collaborate closely with a multidisciplinary team to deliver innovative, holistic care that strengthens health protection across Aotearoa. Your specialist knowledge will support education, contribute to policy and quality initiatives, and help foster safe, effective practice across the service.

About the Team/Service/ Location

The public health nursing team is part of the National Public Health Service (NPHS) within Health New Zealand - Te Whatu Ora and works towards Pae Ora (healthy futures for all) by engaging with the wider determinants that impact people's health, focusing on oranga/wellbeing, prevention, protection, and population-level intervention. We are connected across boundaries to deliver public health services that are nationally planned, regionally delivered and locally tailored.

About you

You're an experienced Registered Nurse with expertise in the areas of public health, communicable diseases, contact tracing and vaccinations. With a strong commitment to equity, you'll bring both technical skill and cultural competence to the forefront of communicable disease prevention and response. You'll have some knowledge and experience with infection prevention and control, and a working knowledge of a health consumer's journey through the health system

Registered with the Nursing Council of New Zealand and hold a current Annual Practising Certificate
A current proficient portfolio or be working towards gaining a PDRP
A current full NZ driver's licence is essential
Be prepared to work towards, or already be, an authorised vaccinator
Awareness of key Public Health issues in New Zealand and/or an interest and enthusiasm for public health
Demonstrated competence in the application of Māori health models to Nursing practice.
Well-developed time management skills to enable deadlines to be managed and met
Ability to identify opportunities for systems improvements
Can-do attitude and flexible working style
In short: you're a skilled, culturally grounded nurse who's ready to make a lasting impact in protecting and promoting the health of communities across Aotearoa.
