Regional Indigenous Emergency Liaison
Cranbrook, B.C.

Nestled within the beautiful Rocky and Purcell Mountains, in the southeast corner of British Columbia, the East Kootenay region is a four-season destination. The region boasts unlimited year-round outdoor recreation including skiing, hiking, biking, kayaking, canoeing, golfing, boating, hunting, fishing, wildlife viewing, mountaineering, white-water rafting and snowmobiling. The Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) serves over 60,000 permanent residents and about 25,000 to 30,000 seasonal residents. The region is home to several diverse communities, including several unincorporated communities; eight municipalities and four First Nations communities.

The Regional Indigenous Emergency Liaison (RIEL) position will play a significant part in strengthening and coordinating relationships between the Regional District of East Kootenay and municipal partners, and the First Nation governments within the region. This position will bolster government-to-government communication and collaboration, strengthening emergency management coordination. Working alongside the RDEK’s East Kootenay Emergency Management Program (EKEMP), the RIEL will assist and coordinate efforts to support resilient, respectful, and cooperative partnerships to improve response preparedness, mitigate potential hazards, and ensure culturally respectful emergency planning and recovery processes. This position is based out of our Cranbrook office.

Qualifications and experience:

Education or experience in Indigenous studies, public administration, emergency management, or a related field.
Three years of experience with First Nation administration, community engagement, or emergency management.
A Valid BC Drivers Licence.


Key Skills and Abilities:

Willingness to travel within the region.
Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and overtime as required.
In-depth understanding of Indigenous history, rights, and cultural practices, specifically within the East Kootenay region.
Knowledge of emergency management principles, practices, and legislation, including the B.C. Emergency and Disaster Management Act.
Strong collaboration and communication skills and the ability to work within complex and sensitive issues with cultural competence.
Ability to facilitate meetings, mediate discussions, and build consensus among diverse groups.


The RDEK offers a great work environment and an attractive total compensation package, which includes a competitive salary, excellent benefits and learning opportunities. This is a permanent, full-time (35 hours per week) exempt position with an annual salary range of $86,24+.80 to $112,512.40, with up to an additional 180 hours of compensation annually ($+4,780.00 to $123,640.00). This position is based out of our Cranbrook Office.
