Regular / Senior Gameplay Tools Programmer

Dambuster Studios - creators of the number one BAFTA-nominated smash hit Dead Island 2 - has an exciting opportunity for a Gameplay Tools Programmer at a Regular or Senior level to join our highly talented Gamecode (Scripting, Cinematics and Interactions) team.

Role overview

Joining our team, you will drive the development and evolution of tools that empower our game developers. You will play a critical role in improving workflows, streamlining debugging, and ensuring consistency and efficiency in how our studio uses and builds upon Unreal Engine. This is an exciting opportunity to have a significant impact on the creative process, directly contributing to the development of exceptional gameplay experiences.

• Core hours +.30am – 4pm, remaining hours worked flexibly
• Workstyle: Studio, hybrid or remote within the UK
• If hybrid, you must live within 50 miles of our studio or be willing to relocate to within 50 miles
• If remote within the UK, you will be required to come into our studio as agreed with the hiring manager

Responsibilities
• Be the primary developer of new gameplay tools for the studio.
• Take ownership of existing gameplay tools, maintaining and iterating on them.
• Build and share knowledge of Unreal Editor and the ways it can be extended or modified to assist development.
• Oversee collaborative gameplay and editor tools, empowering and supporting other developers.
• Collaborate with feature teams to gather requirements and identify new tool functionalities to support their workflows.
• Promote consistency in the presentation, user experience, and approach to tools development.
• Audit and advise on game data architecture, encouraging improvements and best practices.
• Re-orientate gameplay debugging functionality to make it more self-discoverable.
• Stay up to date with the latest Unreal Engine features and evaluate their potential for integration into tools pipelines.

Requirements
• Essential - Solid grasp of the Unreal Editor and its ability to be extended.
• Essential – Good C++ programming skills.
• Essential – Experience developing Unreal Editor tools and other applications within the context of game development.
• Essential – Great communication skills, alongside an inquisitive attitude towards the users of your output.
• Essential – Basic understanding of Unreal’s Slate UI framework.
• Desirable – Knowledge of, or experience with, Dear ImGui.
• Desirable – Experience writing documentation for tool users.
• Desirable – Deep understanding of Unreal’s Slate UI framework.
