Mercury is a bold future-focused organisation, providing energy and telecommunications to more Kiwis than anyone else, leading the way with renewable energy and working toward a sustainable future. At the heart is our purpose. Taking care of tomorrow: connecting people and place today. This pushes us to do all we can to create a better future for our people, our communities, and Aotearoa New Zealand.

Tā mātou arawātea | Our Opportunity:

At Mercury, we’re committed to making a real difference for New Zealanders as we navigate the energy transition. This is your opportunity to influence the regulatory and policy landscape that underpins how our country is powered – and to join an organisation known for leading brave, complex conversations. This is not a “tick-the-box” regulatory role. It’s strategic, impactful, hands-on, and genuinely influential.

We have a respected voice across the sector and consistently demonstrate proactive leadership, shaping policies that deliver better results for customers, the system, and Aotearoa New Zealand’s long-term energy future. You will thrive in this role if you want to influence meaningful change, navigate complexity and work in a fast-moving environment.

This role is flexible to be based in Auckland, Hamilton, Tauranga, or Wellington.

Tāu e mahi ai | What you'll be doing:

You will directly contribute to issues that matter for real people – from whether there is enough electricity supply for the future, to whether households can afford power. You will work across an incredible breadth of topics, stakeholders, and levels – from Chief Executives through to advisors in competitor organisations, government agencies, and regulators. You’ll be part of a collaborative culture that values curiosity, care for customers, and taking action. This is a strategic leadership position that also requires hands-on delivery while leading a team of two.

Key responsibilities include:

Support the Head of Policy & Government Relations to develop and refine Mercury’s approach to managing regulatory and government risks
Translate strategic priorities into a clear, actionable work programme for the team, ensuring delivery of key milestones and identifying future capability needs
Provide thought leadership and insight across a wide range of regulatory, market and policy issues
Lead proactive engagement with regulators, government agencies, Ministers’ offices and industry associations
Partner with teams across Sustainability, Wholesale Markets, Customer and Finance to understand impacts and opportunities arising from regulatory change
Prepare high-quality, influential submissions and represent Mercury in key forums
Foster a collaborative, high-performing environment, while also contributing at a hands-on level

Tā mātou e kimi nei | We are looking for:

Significant experience in regulatory, policy, government affairs or related roles
Strong understanding of NZ’s regulatory and policy environment, energy or telco market experienced preferred but not essential
Proven ability to deliver outcomes – we are looking for someone who gets things done and can move from analysis to action quickly
Excellent relationship-building skills and confidence engaging at all levels, internally and externally
Comfortable working in an ambiguous environment
Strategic thinker who also rolls up their sleeves
Motivated by making a real difference for customers and NZ’s energy future

Ngā tāpaetanga a Mercury | Mercury offers:

Additional 5 days leave per annum (MyDays)
$400 one off tax-free payment towards setting up your home office
A diverse workplace where your unique abilities and talents will be recognised and encouraged
Annual salary reviews with excellent parental leave policy, with the option to purchase additional leave
The opportunities, career paths and facilities associated with working for one of New Zealand's largest multi-utility providers
Flexible working policy - The autonomy and trust to work flexibly from our purpose-built premises and from home, recognising the value of this flexibility in the modern world
Discounted health insurance and free life and income insurance
Excellent well-being programme including up to $100 annual check ups and confidential assistance programme
