Relief Instructor, Professional Baking
Vancouver Island University is seeking a skilled and passionate Baking Instructor to join the Professional Baking program. This role involves teaching both theoretical knowledge and practical skills required for success in diverse commercial baking environments, from small to large-scale operations. The successful candidate will contribute to curriculum development, recipe creation, and instructional delivery while participating in all aspects of baking production and evaluation, including food costing and quality control. As a member of the instructional team, the instructor will support student success, maintain program excellence, and participate actively in department and university activities.

Pay Level
BCGEU: $71,846 - $115,12+ per annum (prorated if part-time).
Starting Salary
Faculty are placed on the BCGEU salary scale based on education, experience and placement criteria as outlined in the Collective Agreement, to an initial maximum of $8+,412 per annum

Duties:


Teach all aspects of theory and practical skills required for program completion and future employment in the industry, including small and large bakeshop operations.
Participate as a member of the instructional team in the Professional Baking program.
Review and revise curriculum as required and develop new materials and recipes when appropriate.
Participate in and contribute to the Vancouver Island University community.
Participate in all aspects of baking production and assist in the ongoing evaluation of food costing, quality control and instructional delivery.
Completes general updates on the administrative area, faculty or department website (e.g., biographies, announcements, important dates, course information), ensuring information is current and accurate.
Candidates must demonstrate commitment to teaching, learning, and student success. Successful candidates will participate in activities outside the classroom including student support and department committees.

Required Qualifications:


Baker Trade Qualification. Extensive experience in first-class establishments with a minimum of ten years working in a range of commercial baking operations. Provincial Instructor Diploma or equivalent (if in progress, maximum 2 years to complete).

Ability and willingness to work as part of a team comprised of instructors, administrators and support staff.
Excellent organizational skills.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with demonstrated computer literacy required.
A high level of energy and enthusiasm is essential.
Demonstrated experience with new and innovative approaches and trends in baking.
Sensitivity to the needs of a wide variety of adult students returning to education.

Teaching experience in a post-secondary setting.
