Pay Range: $41.44 - $67.44 per hour

Summary:

Job Summary:

This role coordinates the delivery of comprehensive cardiopulmonary care by administering and managing a range of therapeutic and diagnostic interventions and advanced procedures across all patient care areas. The Clinical Specialist exemplifies clinical leadership by mentoring staff, advancing clinical practice through quality improvement initiatives, education, and the integration of evidence-based practices, while ensuring the highest standards of care in complex patient scenarios within the academic medical center. The role includes providing charge therapist duties, coordinating multidisciplinary rounds to ensure continuity of care, and actively assessing staffing levels to support optimal resource allocation and workflow. The Clinical Specialist is also responsible for promoting high-quality care and patient safety through collaboration with interprofessional teams and active participation in clinical oversight. Focus may be in adult and/or neonatal-pediatric respiratory care. This position exemplifies the Rush mission, vision and values and acts in accordance with Rush policies and procedures.

Required Job Qualifications:
• Completion of a bachelor’s degree or higher in a directly related field or current enrollment in Bachelor degree of Science/health care related field with at least 2 years relevant experience in respiratory care
• Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT)
• Active Illinois Respiratory Care Practitioner license at start date

o Applied for IL license if from out of state
• BLS prior to start date
• ACLS prior to start date (Adults)
• PALS prior to start date (Neo/Peds)
• NBRC Adult Critical Care Specialty (ACCS) credential (Adults)
• NBRC Neonatal Pediatric Specialty (NPS) credential (Neonatal/Pediatrics)
• Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) - obtained within 180 days of hire (neo/peds)
• Pass annual competency with no remediation
• Engagement in the pursuit of excellence, i.e. committee participation, CQI and QA initiatives, abstracts, research, Daily Management System (DMS) projects, or other activities to improve the clinical and work environments
• Demonstrate professionalism by belonging to the AARC / ISRC and pursuing education to advance one's knowledge and skills

Required Additional Job Qualifications to Float in a specialty area:
• Minimum 1-year RCS experience at RUMC at time of application
• Must pass annual competency with no more than one remediation in float area(s)

o Annual Competencies requiring remediation will be tracked and assessed year-to-year

Preferred Job Qualifications:
• At least six months’ experience in RUMC Respiratory Care Services
• Above average interpersonal and communication skills

Physical Demands:
• Standing, walking, pushing, and bending for 75% of the day
• Ability to lift 20 pounds to move gas cylinders
• Must be highly adaptable to respond to changing workloads and priorities

Responsibilities:

Job Responsibilities and Expectations:
• Provide charge therapist duties as defined by the House Coverage Checklist
• Assist in completing staff orientation competencies
• Serve on at least one RCS department committee
• Present key DMS board components as part of daily team huddles
• Assess patient cardiopulmonary status through clinical observation, patient assessment, and physiological monitoring
• Administer bronchial hygiene and therapeutic interventions guided by evidence-based protocols
• Recommend and implement appropriate interventions to include but not limited to initiation, alteration and discontinuation of therapy based on patient assessment
• Assess patients before, during and after the administration or application of any medication, procedure or device
• Provide invasive and non-invasive ventilator management based on patient clinical assessment, diagnostic results, ventilation values and waveform analysis
• Perform airway management through assessment, assistance with placement, securement, maintenance, and removal of an artificial airway
• Provide special procedures to include but not limited to external transport, high-risk delivery attendance, surfactant administration, Organ Donor Care Center (ODCC) services, esophageal manometry, Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT), manual prone positioning, continuous medication nebulization, bedside bronchoscopy, bronchoscopic cryotherapy, bedside tracheostomy, high frequency jet ventilation, lung ultrasound, ultrasound arterial blood gas (ABG) acquisition, specialty gas administration, nitric oxide challenges, and during Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) support
• Conduct internal patient transports requiring respiratory support
• Acquire and process blood gas samples
• Perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
• Participate as a member of the Rapid Response Team
• Collaborate closely with multidisciplinary care team and act as clinical resource as needed
• Document work timely, completely, and accurately, including documentation in the patient medical record, department records, and patient charges
• Provide and document patient/family education
• Precept students, new employees and provide observational learning opportunities through shadowing
• Contribute to quality improvement efforts through frontline feedback and participation in committee initiatives in conjunction with department leadership
• Participate in clinical research
• Participate and lead in CQI and QA initiatives including audits
• Competency

o Pass departmental annual competencies in adult and/or neonatal-pediatric respiratory care

o Technical skills are required to adapt equipment and procedures to patient needs

o Analytical skills are required to evaluate patients and their clinical response to therapy

o Customer service skills are required to effectively meet the needs of patients, families, and members of the healthcare team
• Maintain active status of license, credentials, and certifications
• Maintain American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC) Membership
