As a Respiratory Therapist RRT, you'll evaluate, treat, and provide care for patients with acute or chronic cardiopulmonary disorders and associated aspects of other systems. You'll be primarily responsible for all respiratory care modalities ordered by providers, initiating and conducting therapeutic and diagnostic procedures within your scope of practice. This includes observing, assessing, and monitoring signs, symptoms, reactions, general behavior, and physical responses of individuals to respiratory care.

Job Description

Essential Functions at Monument Health Acute Inpatient Locations:
• Be familiar with the roles and responsibilities of all members of the healthcare team. Collaborate with them to streamline care, facilitate communication between departments and improve patient outcomes.
• The assessment of patients' respiratory condition involves a review of current data, gathering of extra information, and advocating for the acquisition of more data.
• The respiratory care treatment plans are created, executed, and modified by assessing the pulmonary and circulatory systems, following department policies and regulations, medical protocols authorized by physicians, treatment pathways, recommendations, and orders given by a doctor either in writing, orally, or through telecommunication.
• Performs and initiates prescribed therapeutic and diagnostic procedures encompassing distributing aerosol medications, providing humidity and aerosols, undertaking postural drainage, conducting pulmonary function testing, maintaining bronchopulmonary hygiene, monitoring hemodynamics, administering medical gases, and executing physiologic monitoring, whilst also collecting diagnostic specimens.
• In this role, the individual is responsible for overseeing the proper functioning of mechanical ventilators and administering other life support methods as necessary. They must also maintain and regulate natural and artificial airways, perform invasive and non-invasive procedures, and adhere to established safety and care protocols.
• The medical record and other forms serve as a repository for essential patient information that the healthcare team needs to communicate and coordinate effectively.
• Exhibits mastery in conducting intricate medical procedures while demonstrating excellent analytical competencies necessary for caring for patients with severe medical issues.
• Procures, arranges, tunes up, and validates mandatory equipment for delivering respiratory therapy. Harnesses analytical skills to identify and resolve malfunctions of respiratory devices.
• Appropriately adapts communication styles and delivery methods to suit patients' individual needs.
• Engages in employee and student orientation, mentorship, and education. Provides a range of teaching/learning opportunities, formal and informal, to help employees acquire and uphold the competence required for safety and effectiveness.
• Abides by given instructions, maintains confidentiality, avoids any kind of favoritism, observes the MH Code of Conduct, Standards of Performance, and ethical standards that guide their profession.
• The assigned personnel are responsible for ensuring strict adherence to all mandatory departmental and hospital-specific education, certification, and licensure requirements.
• The specific duties and responsibilities could diverge based on the healthcare environment and institution.
• You will need to be flexible in your role, as you may be asked to complete tasks outside of your job description.

Additional Requirements:

Required:

Education - Associates in Health Sciences

Certification - Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) - South Dakota Board of Medical and Osteopathic Examiners, Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) - National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC), Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification - American Heart Association (AHA)

Preferred:

Education - Bachelors in Health Sciences

Physical Requirements:

Very Heavy work - exerting over 25 pounds of force constantly (67-100% of the time), and/or more than 50 pounds frequently (34-66% of the time), and/or more than 100 pounds of force occassionally (up to 33% of the time), and/or more than 100 pounds of force seldomly to move objects. Possible exposure to radiation and frequent exposure to contaminated needles and infectious body substances. Requires the ability to work designated shift lengths (including 8 and 12 hours), which may include night shifts or occasional irregular hours.
