Location: Hurstpierpoint
Salary: Band 1 (£22,36+ pa FTE)
Working hours: Monday to Friday, 37.5 hours per week
Contract type: Permanent

Are you looking for a physical job, combining driving and delivering excellent customer service?
As a Retail Driver, you will be driving our vans to collect and deliver stock, moving goods around the Distribution Centre, whilst always providing exceptional customer service. Whether it is making sure that deliveries are on time or enabling the retail teams on the shop floor to sell the best possible items, your role is crucial to the smooth running of our shops.
This role is varied, as it involves delivering stock to our 10 fashion and furniture charity shops (based in Brighton & Hove, Burgess Hill, Haywards Heath, Lewes, Lindfield, Uckfield), collecting furniture from our supporters’ homes and donations from local clothes banks as well as supporting Big Green house clearances.
We have four full time Retail Drivers and one Distribution Centre Assistant who goes into the van with the drivers, so whilst there can be some element of lone working to this role, you will be part of a wider retail team made of employees and volunteers and constantly be on the move, between shops, our supporter’s houses, the tip, the distribution centre and local clothes banks.
St Peter & St James Hospice is looking to recruit a committed and passionate Retail Driver to join our Distribution Centre team. Without our retail drivers, we would not be able to sell donated goods that will give us the funds to look after patients and those close to them, which is at the core of everything we do.
• Full-time, permanent 37.5 hours per week (Monday to Friday +am - 5pm with some early mornings)
• Rural Location - Please check you can access the Distribution Centre (Hurstpierpoint, Hassocks BN6 +ES) before applying.
• Must have lived in the UK for the last 2 years
• You will need to have had a Driving licence enabling you to drive for at least 3 years with no endorsements, and no accidents or claims in the last 5 years in any vehicle.
• Candidates will be shortlisted as and when they apply so we suggest applying sooner rather than later.
Who are we looing for?
• A confident and safe Luton van driver
• Determination to put safety first, with a good understanding of road safety and manual handling regulations
• Ability to get in and out of a van quickly and multiple times throughout the day as well as lift and carry load
• Excellent customer service and communication skills
• Must be highly motivated, a self-starter with the ability to hit the ground running with limited guidance.
• Friendly, positive and willing with a “can-do” attitude
• Enthusiasm to work proactively as part of a team as well as on own initiative
As the work involves some house clearances and moving of furniture you will need a good level of physical fitness and be able to lift heavy and/or bulky items - similar to what you might find in a house removal role.
From our Distribution Centre in Hurstpierpoint, West Sussex our Retail Drivers help support our network of local stores by delivering essential stock, making collections and carrying out house clearances within the local area to collect donated items.
We are looking for enthusiastic, competent drivers with a ‘can do’ attitude who we can call upon to work on an ad hoc basis to effectively and safely support our day-to-day logistical movement of stock activities.
Our drivers are required to greet and interact with customers and the public with a professional and positive attitude, put safety first, and have a good understanding of road safety and manual handling regulations.
In order to meet the requirements of our vehicle insurance policy, our drivers need to:
• have held a driving licence for at least 3 years with no endorsements
• hold a full, clean driving licence to include at least Category B
• have had no accidents or claims in the last 5 years in any vehicle, and
• be over 21 years of age
