Part-time training supported

About the Role: As a Rural Hospital Medicine Trainee at Whakatāne Hospital, you'll work as part of a small, skilled, and supportive clinical team in a 110-bed provincial hospital serving a population of around 50,000. The hospital is accredited by the RNZCGP Division of Rural Hospital Medicine, and trainees are fully supervised according to the programme's framework.
We currently offer four registrar positions, with the following rotations available:
6 months split: 0.5 FTE Anaesthetics / 0.5 FTE Emergency Department
6 months General Medicine (also accredited RACP)
6 months Emergency medicine (also accredited with ACEM)
6months Paediatrics
6 months Obstetrics and gynaecology
General practice
This role includes 24/7 medical cover; strong focus is placed on building a sustainable rural medical workforce while improving health equity for our predominantly Māori population—55% of ED presentations are Māori.
The position is part of the Te Manawa Taki regional training network, which also provides training opportunities in Waikato, Lakes, and Bay of Plenty districts.

About you
As a Rural Hospital Medicine Trainee, you will: • Be enrolled in the Division of Rural Hospital Medicine Training Programme • Be eligible for registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand • Demonstrate a strong interest in rural and Māori health • Show initiative, adaptability, and teamwork • Be enthusiastic about working in a resourceful, rural setting
