About Us:
We are a passionate organisation, connected in our shared goal to be ‘sector leading’ in all that we do for the community and each other. Home to over 100,000 residents, Bayside City Council's enduring purpose is building extraordinary places, thriving communities, and better futures.
Bayside Council is an equal-opportunity employer committed to providing an accessible and safe working environment that embraces and values child safety, diversity, and inclusion. Our organisational strategy is made up of three priorities and we consider these in everything we do: Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, Customer Experience and Results Matter.
We want everyone to be as proud of what we are achieving – and excited about our future – as we are, and we are committed to working together to achieve this.
About the Role:
Bayside City Council is on an exciting journey to mature all aspects of occupational health, safety and wellbeing across the organisation. To support this journey, we are seeking a contemporary and established safety professional to ensure continuity of ‘business as usual’ safety activities, while also supporting the Workplace Health, Safety and Wellbeing Lead to deliver progressive safety and wellbeing improvement initiatives.
This role offers the opportunity to operate as a trusted safety partner within a complex Council environment, influence meaningful and sustainable change, and play a key role in shaping how health, safety and wellbeing is embedded across the organisation.
Working within a small but dedicated safety team, the role requires strong collaboration with key stakeholders across all Council divisions. You will actively promote a safety culture that supports and enables people leaders to identify and mitigate hazards and drive continuous safety improvement. With a hands‑on approach and a solution‑focused mindset, you will have ample opportunity to apply your existing expertise while further developing areas of professional interest that add value to Council’s safety management system and evolving risk profile.
You will be responsible for:
Supporting the delivery of Council's Health, Safety and Wellbeing initiatives.
Being a ‘point of contact’ that provides education, guidance, assistance, training and support to our staff and stakeholders as a credible subject‑matter OHS expert.
Assisting leaders and staff respond and manage workplace hazards, risks, incidents and investigations.
OHS reporting, systems monitoring, staff engagement, the execution of safety projects, and OHS committee/consultation arrangements, with a focus on continuous improvement and governance assurance.
Participate in the development and coordination of health and wellbeing activities, programs and initiatives.
Contribute to the development, review and implementation of OHS policies, procedures and frameworks across the organisation.
Key Selection Criteria:
To be successful in this role, you will bring the following skills and competencies:
Proven ability to provide high level, pragmatic safety advice that meets legislation and operational needs across all areas of health, safety and wellbeing.
The ability to effectively communicate, collaborate and build rapport with all levels of staff.
A creative, flexible and improvement driven mindset.
You are a self-starter and are passionate about making a meaningful difference in the lives of all those who work or volunteer for Council.
You have a good working knowledge of IT and software packages, including Excel, Word, Power Point.
The following qualifications and experience are required for the position:
An appropriate tertiary qualification (Advanced Diploma) in Health and Safety or related discipline (Mandatory).
Minimum 3–5 years’ experience in a health and safety role (Mandatory), with demonstrated experience operating in complex organisational environments.
Training or qualification in incident investigation (iCAM, etc. desirable) and risk assessments.
Knowledge and experience in the use/administration of HSI DoneSafe (Desirable)
RTW Coordinator certification (Desirable).
First Aid certification and other relevant safety competencies (Desirable).
Mandatory pre-employment requirements:
Be willing to undergo and complete a satisfactory criminal history check.
Provide or obtain an employment-based Working with Children check.
What we can offer you in return:
A work life/balance through flexible and hybrid working arrangements.
Generous leave provisions, including accrued time off, parental leave, three days of wellbeing leave per year, cultural and ceremonial leave, gender affirmation leave, plus the ability to purchase up to four weeks additional leave per year.
Dedicated Staff Wellbeing programs, events and gym membership discounts.
Learning and development opportunities so our people can grow and thrive.
A Parkland surrounded office that is only short 500m stroll to the beach.
Free onsite staff parking plus hybrid vehicles that employees can book for work related travel.
If you are ready to be part of our incredible organisation, and you think this role is the right fit for you, then we look forward to finding out more about you and what you would bring to this role.
