About the Position
The role of the School Counsellor is to maximise the educational outcomes for all students by providing a counselling service for years Reception to 12 which will be relevant and responsive to the student’s needs, assist them to make independent, well-informed decisions and choices and contribute to their adjustment to the school environment.
As a School Counsellor, you will:
Provide a counselling service which is relevant and responsive to students’ needs with an emphasis on promoting resilience and wellbeing.
Assist in the delivery of specialist programs in areas such as emotional regulation, mental wellbeing, healthy relationships, family and peer conflict, coping with stress, and substance use education.
Assist students, staff, and parents in further developing positive interpersonal interactions.
Establish and develop student and parent support networks with community agencies in order to support student wellbeing.
Liaise with other organisations to ensure that the students’ needs are met.
Refer students to other agencies as required.
Provide support to teachers to assist student wellbeing practices.
Support and implement attendance strategies including notification to appropriate authorities if necessary.
Provide guidance and support for school-based student wellbeing initiatives, programs, and staff.
Advise school leadership and wellbeing promptly and accurately of relevant issues in relation to student wellbeing and safeguarding and offer a range of constructive actions.
Assist with the transition programs in the school.
Assist with Educational retreat programs.
Maintain student records, formulate reports, implement evaluation procedures and collect relevant data in accordance with Centacare Catholic Country SA and School requirements.
Provide counselling and therapeutic services within other programs as required.
Travel between regional locations / schools as required.

About You
To be successful in this role you will have:
Hold an appropriate Degree in Social Work or a Human Service-related area (relevant to providing Counselling services)
o Current Bachelor Social Work students who can demonstrate successful completion of third year placement encouraged to apply.
o Current Masters Social Work students who can demonstrate completion of their first placement are encouraged to apply.
Hold a Diploma in Counselling.
o Minimum 2 years’ experience working with children and youth required.
Eligibility and willingness to obtain membership with relevant professional body (e.g. Australian Association of Social Workers, Australian Counselling Association) where applicable.
Experience in the field of therapeutic counselling utilising a high level of skills.
Experience in developing and facilitating groups, presentations and workshops.
Sound knowledge of a range of counselling theories and therapeutic interventions.
Sound knowledge of issues around family relationships and separation, family violence, suicide ideation, peer pressure, bullying, self-esteem, drug and/or ******* abuse, mental health and mental illness.
Knowledge of issues related to service delivery in rural and remote areas.Knowledge of trauma-informed and culturally safe practices.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
Demonstrated ability to work with and be sensitive to the differing needs of people from various cultural groups.
High level of communication and negotiation skills, both verbally and in writing.
Effective organisational and time management skills.
Demonstrated ability to work in a highly confidential manner.
High level of ability in the use of Microsoft Office and Information Technology.
Requirements of the role:
Hold (or willingness to obtain) a current DHS Working With Children Check *
Hold (or a willingness to obtain) a National Criminal History Record Check (Police Check) *
Hold a current South Australian Driver’s License (minimum Provisional License)
