Job Description
Are you passionate about all children’s right to access and participate in meaningful education?

Do you have the skills and knowledge to impact change and remove barriers for sustainable outcomes?

Can you demonstrate resilience in the face of adversity?

54 reasons’ Student Advocacy Service works with students from pre-school up to 18 years and their families who are experiencing, or at risk of experiencing, exclusion from education. Our approach is child-centred, strengths-based and solution focused, working collaboratively with students, parents/carers and schools to negotiate agreement so that all students can successfully access and participate in education.

54 reasons is Australia’s leading child rights organisation – no ordinary not-for-profit.

Proudly part of the Save the Children Australia Group and global movement, we’re here to make sure that children and young people have their rights met and thrive, in all their diversity.

With the child’s voice at the centre, we provide quality services to children and their caregivers in every state and territory, and across regions, remote areas and capital cities. From our programs to our support services - this is the place to realise your purpose.

A place to make a difference:

In this part-time, 30.4 hours or 4 day per week, maximum term (until March 2027) role, you’ll work closely with the Team Leader and Specialist Advocate, based in our Winnellie office as well as operating and working alongside families and schools in Darwin and Palmerston areas. Your role will focus on providing an advocacy service for students attending or enrolling in Northern Territory Government (NTG) schools, and their families, to ensure they can access and participate in education.

You will make a difference by:

Working with children and families to identify strengths and establish goals towards achieving the child’s increased inclusion in education
Assisting students and their families to understand and navigate the education system, practices and processes
Referring the student and their family to support networks, organisations and information sources
Working closely with relevant and appropriate stakeholders (i.e. Department of Education, NTG Schools, Service Providers, Peak Organisations)
Collecting and recording program data and information for the purpose of planning, evaluation and reporting
A place to feel valued:

You’re a skilled practitioner who is passionate about advocating for children and young people. You use a strengths-based and client-centred approach and have a strong understanding of child rights and the importance of access to education.

This role requires:

Demonstrated experience in working alongside children and young people, families and carers, particularly Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, low socioeconomic and socially or geographically isolated families
Understanding and experience of working within NTG school environments
Knowledge and understanding of the stresses on vulnerable families and the range of family risk and protective factors which impact on child outcomes
Ability to keep accurate records of work undertaken, including entering and maintaining information in an electronic database

A place to belong:

At 54 reasons, we invest in the development and wellbeing of our people. Our workforce is approximately 600 people strong, and proudly diverse, whether in race, ethnicity, gender, age, disability, sexuality, cultures and beliefs.

It takes all types of people to do the challenging work we do. We are diverse personalities, backgrounds and talents, embracing our differences as one strong and united team. We see and celebrate the unique value you bring to our organisation, and offer a range of rewards for your effort, including:

Generous award rate salary (Level 4.1 – $44.58 per hour) plus super and full salary packaging benefits - use this link to see how much this benefit could mean to you!
