What you will do…
As a Settlement Worker you will provide (in person and/or remote) services to newcomer clients including information, orientation and appropriate referrals to community and government services.
You will conduct a needs assessment to identify client’s needs and create a service plan, act as an advocate in helping newcomers access services including education, health care, legal systems and support with filling out forms.
You will enter information into government/ department databases and prepare monthly statistical reports for the Program Lead.
You will connect with ESL schools to provide information and orientation and organize and facilitate group settlement workshops as needed.
Additionally you will connect with community partners and explore effective and efficient service sharing. As always, there might be other duties as assigned
What you will bring…
Ideally, you will have a completion of a community college degree/ diploma or equivalent. 1-2 years of relevant work experience in the field of community service and immigrant settlement.
You will have excellent computer knowledge of Microsoft Office and Access, excellent oral and written communication skills, keep abreast with Immigration legislation/policies affecting refugees and immigrants, mediation and conflict resolution, establish boundaries and manage client relation situations. Possess culturally sensitive and strong inter-personal skills. You will work directly with client information so previous experience working with confidential data and client information is strongly preferred. Communicate in a thorough, clear and timely manner and supporting information sharing and goal achievement across the Association. We also require Police Vulnerable Sector Records check.

Additional information…
This position is made possible by government funding which gives our YMCA the ability to provide the successful candidate with full-time hours for ten (10) months of the year. Based on current funding we do not anticipate there will be any hours available during the months of July and August for each calendar year. The YMCA will provide you with a Record of Employment (ROE) upon request if the successful candidate would like to explore your eligibility for Employment Insurance (EI) during this period of time.
This role requires regular travel across the region, which may not always be easily accessible through public transit. The employee must be able to arrange their own transportation to these sites. A valid G driver’s license and full time vehicle access are strongly recommended.
