Overview
Section Chairs are the lead faculty for their Section. The Section Chair provides visionary leadership on faculty and Section related matters. Responsibilities include appointing/reappointing faculty, providing faculty with feedback and coaching, supporting and monitoring Academic Registrant faculty members’ progress towards achieving their academic career plans, providing faculty feedback and addressing concerns related to faculty performance. Section Chairs support the academic mandate of NOSM University (NOSM U) by supporting the academic activities of faculty members in their Section related to teaching, research and scholarly activity, and administrative contributions.

Section Chairs report to the Division Head of Clinical Sciences Division in the Faculty Affairs Portfolio. There are also working relationships with the Associate Deans of Undergraduate Medical Education (UME), Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME), the Office of Continuing Education and Professional Development, the Research Office, other Section Heads, Residency Program Directors, Phase Coordinators, Directors across the Portfolios, and Hospital Department Chiefs, Site Education Coordinators and Scheduling Officers.

The following are the Sections and Surgical disciplines with Associate Chairs in the NOSM U Division of Clinical Sciences:

Public Health and Preventive Medicine
Radiology
Surgery with Surgery Associate Chairs in General, Orthopedics and Urology
Reporting
The Section Chair, Pathology, reports to the Division Head, Clinical Sciences.

Responsibilities
Summary of Functions
General

Represent NOSM U as the lead faculty for their section at NOSM U, provincially, and nationally.
Provide visionary leadership for NOSM U.
Participate in Section Chair meetings; prepare yearly Section reports for assigned meeting.
Participate in Clinical Sciences Division meetings.
Lead Section specific meetings and Section leadership meetings at least twice per year.
Liaise with faculty in their Section and support collaborations across sites.
Support talent management and mentor faculty within their Section.
Support new faculty recruitment, monitor Section specific capacity issues at teaching sites and explore new capacity options.
Advise on NOSM U teaching and committee participation.
Advise on faculty CEPD needs.
Succession planning for Section specific positions.
Postgraduate Medical Education

Participate in Residency Program Committee meetings (as non-voting members).
Meet with Residency Program Directors to provide direction for the Section and to review the performance of faculty teaching within their program and co-create plans for continuous quality improvement and for the engagement of faculty within the residency program.
Participate on the hiring panels for residency Program Directors, provide mentorship and coaching to residency Program Directors.
Provide support to residency program leadership on matters related to faculty.
Undergraduate Medical Education

Meet with UME clerkship leads and participate in relevant UME committee meetings if invited and relevant to Section.
Jointly oversee with AD UME the UME Section Curriculum Lead.
Facilitate communication between faculty in Section and UME Section Curriculum Lead and Phase 3 Clerkship Leads.
Identify UME Section specific leader(s) to support UME curriculum development and delivery.
Faculty Appointments and Reappointments

Review new Section specific faculty applications for determination of initial rank.
Determine faculty eligibility for rerank and reappointment.
Review eligibility of potential faculty applying for Academic Registration licenses through CPSO.
Perform yearly reviews and complete associated documentation for faculty on Academic Registration licenses.
Faculty Feedback and Promotion

Provide feedback to faculty on their performance.
Coach faculty interested in promotion and provide feedback on progress toward promotion.
Mentor faculty in their Section.
Review promotions applications at request of the Promotions Committee.
Faculty Performance

Provide feedback to faculty as required and related to:

Excellence in academic and scholarly activities;
Learner evaluations of concern;
CPSO findings;
Other incidents reported.
Qualifications
Education
A physician licensed in Ontario, practicing in a NOSM University affiliated site or currently practicing in other northern, rural or remote contexts, or with significant previous academic experience in Northern Ontario.
Certification from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
A current faculty appointment (or eligibility for same) with NOSM U at the rank of Assistant Professor or higher.
Minimum of three (3) years recent practice experience.
Minimum of three (3) years recent experience as a preceptor.
Knowledge of general principles of teaching and learning.
Knowledge of evaluation processes.
Providing motivational support – the ability to enhance other’s commitment to their work.
Developing others – the ability to work with others and coach them to develop their own capabilities.
Managing performance – helping others to take responsibility for their own performance, by setting clear goals and expectations, tracking performance against goals, ensuring feedback and addressing performance problems and issues promptly.
Superior interpersonal, communication, leadership and problem-solving skills are essential.
Problem-solving skills – the ability to tackle a problem by using a logical, systematic and sequential approach.
Familiarity with accreditation processes.
Preference will be given to NOSM U faculty residing at a NOSM University affiliated site.
Language
Must be able to communicate effectively in English (verbally, written and comprehension).
French/Indigenous language skills would be considered asset.
Remuneration
As per the stipendiary faculty remuneration process.
Time Commitment
Two (2.0) days per month.
