Kōrero mō te tūranga | About the Role
We are looking for an enthusiastic and talented professional to join the Natural Resources team. This role will provide you with leadership responsibilities and an opportunity to help us with some of the significant policy and financial challenges facing Aotearoa/ New Zealand. The Natural Resources team covers policy and finance matters relating to the environment, conservation, primary industries, and land information. We also work alongside the Climate Change team on key policy areas.
The position is a core role in the Natural Resources team. You would be responsible for leading engagement with one or more of our agencies. The role involves financial management and budget responsibilities, strategic sector policy analysis, and supporting cross-cutting areas, particularly areas relating to our economic and fiscal strategy. The role will provide you with opportunities for leadership and coaching, with periodic acting manager opportunities.
It will be important that our agencies are financially sustainable, deliver efficient outcomes, and take advantage of opportunities that enhance sustainable economic growth. There is plenty of scope to deliver these outcomes given the responsibilities of our agencies which include:
Department of Conservation - is the lead adviser on conservation and biodiversity outcomes, manages 30% of New Zealand's land, is a major infrastructure and asset owner, and is a large recreation and tourism provider.
Ministry for Primary Industries - is the lead advisor on New Zealand's food and fibre sector including agriculture, fisheries and forestry which are important contributors NZ's exports. MPI is responsible for biosecurity service which is critical for protecting our primary industries and maintaining access to export markets.
Ministry for the Environment - we work with MfE on resource management reforms, climate change policy, and waste minimisation. We work along side Treasury's climate change team on cross cutting issues.

This important work takes a special kind of person with a passion for making a difference and getting things done. The specific skill set required for this position:
Strong policy, or policy adjacent, background in the public sector, with excellent relationship management skills
An understanding or appreciation of financial management work and Treasury's fiscal policy role
Aptitude for critical thinking and a strong analytical ability
Some experience in coaching and team leadership, with an interest in developing this skill set
Ability to manage a varied workload, work at pace, and deal with ambiguity
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Excellent written and verbal skills with the ability to communicate complex issues and concepts clearly, succinctly and with influence to a range of audiences
Experience engaging with Ministers and their offices
