Operating within Strategic Policy and Legislation, the Senior Legal Officer will work closely with other team members in the Human Rights Unit to provide authoritative advice on complex legal and policy issues and develop options, policies, strategies and initiatives in relation to human rights and justice policy issues.
The Senior Legal Officer will also develop and deliver various materials relating to the Human Rights Act 2019 (including training, education, communication and awareness materials) to support the development of a human rights culture across the Queensland Government as well as DJAG business areas.

About The Role
Strategic Policy and Legislation (SPL) has wide reaching legislative responsibilities that support the operation of Queensland's justice system. SPL has teams that focus on specific aspects of policy and legislation, as well as some specialist project teams. The Senior Legal Officer will be assigned a policy and legislation focus on human rights. Key known future-projects for the Human Rights Unit include: leading work across DJAG to build a human rights culture within the department; and managing the response to and implementation of the first independent review of the Human Rights Act 2019.
As the Senior Legal Officer you will play a key role in fostering and maintaining stakeholder relationships across Queensland Government and externally to support the aims of the HRU and the Act. You will provide authoritative advice on complex legal and policy issues and develop options, policies, strategies and initiatives in relation to human rights and justice policy issues.
What You Will Bring
To thrive in this role, you will need:
Demonstrated high level ability to understand key issues and emerging trends in justice policy, including human rights and anti-discrimination policy, and their implications for the Queensland Government and the community;
Proven ability or demonstrably transferable skills to provide strategic advice and analysis on wide-ranging complex policy and legislative issues, including in relation to human rights matters.
To take responsibility for managing and completing work projects within established timeframes and adjusts priorities quickly as circumstances dictate.
An ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with team and internal and external stakeholders to support and formulate policy outcomes.
High level oral and written communication and negotiation skills and the ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment
To behave in an ethical, respectful and culturally sensitive manner.
