Department: Internal Controls Compliance

Work model: Minimum 3 days in the office per week

Company: George Weston Limited (Parent of Loblaw, Shoppers Drug Mart, Choice Properties)

Company Overview:

George Weston Limited (“GWL”) is a leading Canadian public company, founded in 1882. GWL’s portfolio includes controlling interests in Loblaw Companies Limited and Shoppers Drug Mart, which together represent Canada’s largest food and drug retail businesses. GWL also controls Choice Properties REIT, the country’s pre-eminent diversified real estate investment trust.

Choice Properties REIT owns over 700 high-quality commercial and residential properties across Canada. With more than 2,400 retail locations, Loblaw and Shoppers Drug Mart serve the everyday food, health, and wellness needs of most Canadians.

Through its ownership of Loblaw and Choice Properties, GWL operates several iconic Canadian brands, including Shoppers Drug Mart, President’s Choice, Joe Fresh, PC Financial, T&T Supermarket, and no name.

Role Overview:

The Internal Controls Compliance (ICC) team is an assurance function that supports the business and management in ensuring appropriate and effective internal controls are in place to prevent or detect fraud or error in quarterly and annual financial statements (ICFR – Internal Controls over Financial Reporting) and ESG reporting (ICSR – Internal Controls over Sustainability Reporting).

As Senior Manager, you will report to the Senior Director, Financial Reporting and Internal Controls. You will play a key role in supporting the annual internal controls testing program for both GWL and Choice Properties REIT, with autonomy to design the annual testing plan in alignment with National Instrument (NI) 52-109 regulations.

You will lead a team of 2–3 dedicated ICC professionals, overseeing the testing of approximately 300 controls—split roughly evenly between the two businesses. This role offers exposure to a wide range of business processes and the opportunity to collaborate with stakeholders at all levels across the GWL Corporate Centre and Choice Properties. You’ll be joining a close-knit team and working in a dynamic, challenging environment that fosters continuous learning.

The Senior Manager, Internal Controls Compliance, will be responsible for:

Supporting the businesses in identifying and implementing process and control improvements.

Leading, mentoring, and developing a team of 2–3 ICC colleagues.

Ensuring compliance with auditing and accounting standards to maintain professional integrity and mitigate risks in the execution of key controls across both businesses.

Building strong working relationships with all levels of management to identify key risks and ensure appropriate controls are in place and effectively mitigated.

Developing and maintaining efficient and effective testing procedures to evaluate the design and operational effectiveness of internal controls.

Assessing the completeness and accuracy of supporting evidence for control execution.

Collaborating with process owners to develop remediation plans for identified issues, monitoring progress, and validating completion by the established due dates.

Supporting ad hoc projects and initiatives as required by the businesses.

Ideal Candidate Profile

We’re looking for someone who brings the following qualifications and attributes:

CPA designation with a minimum of 4 years of progressive experience in external or internal audit (Big 4 experience is an asset).

Strong understanding and hands-on experience in controls testing and process improvement, ideally in compliance with SOX or NI 52-109 (an asset).

Knowledge of COBIT, COSO, and risk-based audit methodologies.

Highly developed professional judgment and problem-solving skills to analyze risk issues and develop effective solutions.

Proven experience in managing and developing a team.

Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with peers and colleagues across functions.

Strong organizational and analytical skills, with a track record of delivering results under tight deadlines.

Ability to manage competing priorities and timelines in a dynamic environment.

Meticulous attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.

Excellent communication skills—written, verbal, and presentation—as well as strong interpersonal and people management capabilities.

Experience in the retail and/or real estate industry is an asset.

Experience with AuditBoard is an asset.
