Position: Senior Software Engineer / Senior Java Engineer
Babylon is a Health Tech company that combines an artificial intelligence powered platform with virtual clinical operations for patients.
General responsibilities
○ Writes and advocates for idiomatic code
○ Proactively improves components they encounter
○ Actively assesses and improves the operational performance of code, e.g. through
dashboards, monitoring and alerts
○ Aware of compliance standards and ensures they are met and ensures SSDLC is followed by
squad
○ Proactively considers security implications of their work
○ Is up-to-date on latest advances in technology and on best practices and guides the squad
appropriately
○ Understands the stack in-depth and is able to troubleshoot issues, including production
issues, from application through to infrastructure
○ Devises and applies technical architecture at the squad level and liaises with tribe architect
to ensure technical architecture aligns with the bigger picture
○ Works with PM/BA and squad team members to guide development and champion technical
input into planning and prioritisation
○ Works with the PM to ensure a minimal feature set that leads to the shortest speed to market
○ Is able to to understand the trade-offs in different approaches, make the right choice for the
situation and communicate those reasons to technical and non-technical stakeholders
○ May provide technical leadership for an important dependency used by multiple squads
○ Leads engineering interviews (coding and system design)"
○ Delivers large well-defined tasks and solves small/medium not-well-defined problems
○ Able to estimate, plan and scope work for the squad
○ Sees future risks in timings, implementation or rollout and acts to avoid them
○ Breaks down large problems into smaller iterative steps across multiple PRs
○ Creates RFC documents and advocates for tribe-wide improvements to technologies and
tooling
○ Identifies problems to solve
○ Is able to express problems and potential solutions with pros and cons in written form
○ Owns the implementation of a solution
○ Regularly pushes for improvements and leads a timely response to all activities where they
are involved
○ Advocates good code quality and best practices across tribe
○ Builds simple tools or iterates existing tools for the benefit of all engineers
○ Actively pushes team to monitor crash reporting tools
○ Onboards / mentors less experienced engineers
○ Leads threat modelling sessions
○ Advises and challenges Product Manager to ensure that MVP is minimal
○ Able to be an effective Tech Lead for a squad
Key Skills required :
● Competency in one of Babylon’s chosen software languages [Java, python, Ruby - back-end,
Javascript, React (Native) on front-end]
● Knowledge of popular software frameworks for the relevant language (desirable)
● Understanding of software testing methodologies
● Understanding of relevant technologies, including databases and cloud deployment
Essential:
4+ years of commercial or open-source software development
