He angitūtanga: The opportunity

Auckland Council and Mana Whenua have jointly established the Māori Cultural Heritage Programme (MCHP) to identify, map, manage and protect Auckland’s Māori heritage places.

Auckland Council has an important role to play in the conservation of Māori heritage in meeting its legal and policy commitments, international obligations, and its responsibilities under Te Tiriti o Waitangi (the Treaty). The MCHP is the programme responsible for scheduling Sites and Places of Significance to Mana Whenua in the Auckland Unitary Plan (AUP), administering the Māori Heritage Alert Layer and providing specialist advice to Auckland Council.

The Senior Specialist assists with the development and implementation of the MCHP. Day to day you will:

Provide detailed technical advice and expert opinion on Māori heritage matters.
Provide and present evidence, and support to Council’s position.
Manage key partnerships with external stakeholders, Mana Whenua, and the community.


As a senior in the team, you will be required to provide a tuakana teina approach to coaching and support of colleagues within the Māori Heritage team.

He kōrero mōu: About you

To be able to provide high-quality specialist advice, expertise and leadership on Māori Heritage matters, you must have the following:

Solid experience in planning/resource management/heritage
An understanding of tikanga Māori
Experience in working within kaupapa Māori frameworks
An outstanding track record of delivering collaborative results


Working experience with iwi in the fields of Māori heritage and/or Māori planning, archaeology, GIS (geographic information systems) or experience in the Treaty settlement space would be a good match for this position.
