Primary objective
Under the direction of the Supervisor of Technical Services, provide day-to-day leadership to the workshop and cleaning staff and maintain
an effective and efficient service and workshop facility to support asset and infrastructure repairs and maintenance across the Park,
including small construction, irrigation and landscaping projects. Manage the Park’s fleet vehicles and supervise volunteers and other
contractors and work groups as required.
Context statement
The Wildlife Park is managed as a zoo and a national park. This position is involved with all asset and infrastructure repairs and
maintenance, management of the workshop, management of vehicles and land management. It has a wide remit.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide day-to-day leadership and guidance to the Technical Services Workshop and cleaners regarding the maintenance of the Park
assets, utilising current Government procedures including repairs and maintenance, minor new works and urgent minor repairs.
Deliver services including grounds maintenance, and weed, fire and feral animal management.
2. Procurement of required materials for fabricating and building structures and exhibits for display animal holding and management
purposes.
3. Maintain a fleet of service vehicles, ensuring servicing obligations and up-keep are met to required Government standard.
4. Ensure that all tools, fuel and materials are kept securely and any losses of tools or uses of materials are accounted for
5. Operate within a strong safety culture and follow defined Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) policies and procedures while
delivering Territory Wildlife Park services and assist with initial emergency responses.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Demonstrated experience undertaking repairs and maintenance to buildings, small machines and other structures within the context
of a busy multi-faceted operational environment.
2. Proven experience undertaking land management tasks specifically grounds maintenance, weed management, feral animal
management and fire preparedness and response.
3. Possess an understanding of animal welfare principles and ability to be creative, problem solve and retrofit exhibits and enclosures
for animals.
4. Work to and promote a high standard of Workplace Health and Safety.
5. Possess excellent communication, organisational and time management skills, small project management, reporting and
an understanding of computer spreadsheet and document programs.
6. Demonstrated ability to remain positive and maintain a consistently high level of energy, enthusiasm and motivation through
fluctuating workloads and demands.
7. Possession of an Australian driver’s licence with an MR endorsement; possession of, or ability to obtain within a short timeframe,
level II firefighting, ChemCERT, bobcat, chainsaw, working at heights and any other relevant trade qualifications.
Desirable
1. Other relevant certificates such as first aid and fire-fighting as well as small machinery use are desirable.
2. An understanding of zoo-based conservation organisations and the importance of visitor amenity and safety, animal welfare and staff
amenity and safety.
