The opportunity
Join CSIRO’s Engineering and Technology program as a Software Engineer and play a pivotal role in advancing Australia’s marine science! In this exciting position, you’ll support a diverse range of research projects that directly impact the Marine National Facility and contribute to the development of cutting-edge, in-house equipment used to explore and understand our marine environment. Your work will span from designing robust instrument control systems to developing data acquisition and analysis software, enabling world-class marine research. This is a unique opportunity to collaborate with leading scientists and engineers, apply your software skills to real-world challenges, and help drive innovation in marine science at the national level.

Your high-level duties will include:
Collaborate with team members to design, develop, test, and maintain software applications in line with project requirements.
Assist in troubleshooting, debugging, and resolving software defects and technical issues.
Participate in code reviews and contribute to continuous improvement of development processes.
Document code, technical specifications, and user manuals as needed.
Communicate progress and challenges effectively within the team and with stakeholders.
Communicate openly, effectively and respectfully with all staff, clients and suppliers in the interests of good business practice, collaboration and enhancement of CSIRO’s reputation.
Work collaboratively as part of a multi-disciplinary team, and business unit to carry out tasks in support of CSIRO scientific objectives.
Adhere to the spirit and practice of CSIRO’s Values, Code of Conduct, Health, Safety and Environment procedures and policy and diversity initiatives.

Role particulars

Location: Hobart, TAS

Salary: AU$76,068 to AU$96,813 per annum (pro-rata for part-time) + 15.4% superannuation

Tenure & work schedule: Specified term of 1 year, Full-time

As the successful candidate, you will bring:

Essential criteria
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience).
Proficiency in at least one programming language (Python preferred).
Familiarity with software development methodologies (Agile/Scrum preferred).
Strong problem-solving skills and willingness to learn.
Good communication and teamwork abilities.

Desirable criteria

Experience with modern development tools and environments (e.g., Git, Docker, CI/CD pipelines).
Experience developing or testing web applications, including responsive design and cross-browser compatibility.
Ability to develop and execute test plans, write test cases, and document results in defect reports.
Proven contribution to a public, open-source projects (own or others)
