Elsevier has many mature operational Insights and Analytics teams working across the different business domains. In addition, we are now establishing a more coherent Business Data Platform to further consolidate and optimise the provision of the key data services. These enable data producers and consumers across the business to service the growing volume of Insights and Analytics on which our Colleagues and Customers rely. The success of the platform and data and analytics ecosystem it empowers will enable the business to perform and deliver on our objective to "empower Elsevier with trusted data and insights".
You will provide solutions that help bring data, governance and technology together to create customer, commercial and operational insight. You will collaborate with colleagues across the business to understand their needs and requirements to ensure our data and engineering efforts are value driven. In doing so, you will help lead the way in maturing our data and analytics capabilities, driving standardisation in data management, advocating for sharing and re-use of data and ultimately embedding a data driven culture.
Your work will connect you with a broad and diverse community of colleagues across the business. They will have a mix of different levels of data literacy and technical knowledge; from novice to seasoned professional.
About the role
Your role is part of the Post Sales and Data team within our wider Digital Business Solutions technology group. As the Software Engineering Lead, you will lead, line manage and develop the Data Catalog, Analytics and Visualisation Squad, a key part of the wider Business Data Platform. This platform encompasses a set of key technologies and an operating model based on the Data Mesh conceptual architecture.
You will partner with the business Product Owner to define and deliver the roadmap whilst maintaining operational excellence. The initial scope of technologies under your remit includes Collibra, Tableau and Knime although these will develop over time as our business needs and maturity evolve.
Your success will ultimately be measured by the value and service (robustness, scalability and operational efficiency) delivered through this tooling, as part of the Business Data Platform, and their contribution to ensuring the best outcomes for our customers and our business. In practice, this will mean supporting strategic leadership and operational management of the platform data services under your remit. It will extend to the management of your engineering Squad, driving adoption and best use of the data platform services, and streamlining our data analytics capabilities and processes.
Your key accountabilities and responsibilities
• Accountable for the development, support and service level of Catalog, Analytics and Visualisation tooling (inc. platform integrations, administration, patching, infrastructure optimisation, etc.), working closely with Product Managers to develop delivery strategy and release plans
• Accountable for optimising Agile processes, tools, and techniques to build efficiency, deliver value and shape best-practice in collaboration with key stakeholders
• Responsible for line managing the development team: hiring and coaching brilliant software engineers and helping them to develop their careers
• Responsible for ensuring all staff are provided with training and resources needed to perform their jobs to the most outstanding degree possible.
• Responsible for the platform developer experience for consumers of the tools (inc. extending self-service capabilities, providing subject matter expertise and best practice)
Your most important qualities
• A passion for transforming, delivering, and managing value orientated data services
• An understanding of the importance of self-service data enablement and user experience
• A drive to deliver value by solving both business and technical problems
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills with both business and technology stakeholders
• A desire to coach, inspire and empower individuals and a team to high levels of autonomy and performance
• Self-motivated, with a desire to understand data and analytics and learn new tools and techniques
Recommended experience
• Proven experience in leading high-performing agile software and/or data engineering teams
• Direct experience of managing and developing with data catalog, analytics, or data visualization technologies (e.g. Collibra Data Catalog, Tableau Server, KNIME Server, Snowflake Cloud Data Warehouse, etc.)
• Advanced knowledge of software development methodologies (e.g., Agile, Waterfall)
• Experience of applying modern CICD to data engineering and platform ecosystems (inc. tools, technology and languages like Jenkins, Terraform, AWS, Python, SQL, Java)
