About the VGSO

The VGSO provides responsive legal services exclusively for the Victorian Government and public sector. Our place within government ensures we are at the centre of legal change, reform and problem-solving. We operate as a service-driven, fee for service, legal professional practice and strive for excellence in this competitive environment. About the branch
The Commercial, Property and Technology (CP&T) Branch assists government clients to conduct significant transactions and projects, manage their corporate affairs and acquire, manage or dispose of land, goods or services. The branch offers specialist services in IP/IT, property and Native Title. It offers deep commercial expertise with a government perspective.
About the role
We're looking for a committed and enthusiastic lawyer with a commercial background, in the early stage of their legal career, to join the Commercial, Property & Technology Branch. If you have an interest in applying commercial law within a government context — working on matters that serve government and public sector clients— this could be the opportunity for you.
Here, you won't just be part of a team, you'll be empowered to build your own practice, foster meaningful client relationships, and sharpen your skills through hands-on experience. You'll be delivering practical, strategic legal advice on matters that are as diverse as they are interesting.
Working in a government context means you'll tackle unique and rewarding challenges, with opportunities to branch out beyond commercial law into technology, property, and native title. It's a chance to grow, explore, and make a real impact.
Responsibilities
Manage your own matters from start to finish (with appropriate supervision) and develop your own client relationships
Provide high quality commercial legal advice to government on complex and challenging legal issues (through a mix of advice and transactional work)
Work on broad, diverse projects supporting and involving commercial, technology, IP, property and native title teams
Contribute to valuable knowledge management and business development projects
Skills and experience
1-3 years' post-admission experience
Knowledge and understanding of basic principles and practice of commercial law
Experience working in a government, policy or regulatory context advantageous but not essential
A natural communicator, skilled at building trusted relationships and delivering clear, confident advice
Flexible and focused, able to navigate competing priorities with the support of a collaborative team environment
Benefits
VGSO offers an inclusive, collegiate and collaborative work environment where you will be well-supported and mentored to develop your knowledge. You will also be given excellent career opportunities to progress and develop within the organisation.
VGSO embraces flexibility and welcomes a conversation to help you achieve work-life balance. We currently work in a hybrid environment with employees enjoying a balance of working from home and in the office
