Appointment of the Solicitor General of New South Wales
Location: Sydney CBD
Total Salary: $495,040 per annum
Conveyance Allowance: $24,950 *The Conveyance Allowance determined here shall not count towards pension or for superannuation purposes.
The Government of New South Wales is seeking Expressions of Interest (EOIs) from outstanding and suitably qualified legal practitioners for appointment to the statutory office of Solicitor General of New South Wales.
About the Role
The Solicitor General is appointed under the Solicitor General Act 1969. The principal functions of the Solicitor General are to:
Act as counsel for the State of New South Wales; and
Perform the functions of the First Law Officer in the absence of, or under delegation from, the Attorney General.
The appointee will be a senior legal practitioner who is highly respected within the legal profession, recognised for:
Their capacity to provide authoritative opinions on complex and sensitive legal matters affecting the State; and
Their skilful advocacy in high‑profile proceedings, particularly in constitutional and public law cases before superior courts, including the High Court of Australia.
The successful candidate will also demonstrate the professional and personal qualities expected of judicial officers in NSW as outlined on the Department of Communities and Justice website.

Eligibility and Term
Applicants must be Australian lawyers of at least 7 years’ standing. The appointment is for a 10‑year statutory term.

Conditions of Employment
Conditions of employment are determined by the Solicitor General Act 1969. The salary is set by the Statutory and Other Offices Remuneration Tribunal.
