Must pass a background clearance.
Current Alabama nursing license (RN or LPN)
Official transcripts verifying a minimum Associate's Degree (or) a minimum of 48 completed semester hours of study at a regionally accredited institution
Job Description:

The job of Special Education Paraprofessional established for the purpose/s of providing support to the instructional program. The paraprofessional is assigned to a specific school with specific responsibility for assisting in the supervision and instruction of special needs students, observing and documenting student progress, implementing the plan for education, and supporting students by providing for special health care needs.

Working Environment: The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling; some climbing and balancing; considerable stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling and significant fine finger dexterity.

Reports To: Principal and Special Education Coordinator

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Adapts classroom activities, assignments and/or materials under the direction of the supervising teacher for the purpose of supporting and reinforcing classroom objectives.
Administers immediate aid and assistance as instructed by a healthcare professional (e.g., lifting students, diapering, feeding, etc.) to meet urgent health care needs and developing children's daily living activities and behavioral skills.
Applies and removes physical therapy appliances as instructed (e.g., body braces leg braces, etc.) to ensure the student has the proper equipment according to the IEP plan.
Assists students by enabling them to access their electronic communicators, switches, pointers, feeders, etc. to ensure equipment is hooked up correctly and functioning properly.
Assists students in and out of wheelchairs; loading and unloading on the bus/ transporting students in their wheelchairs in and around the school and on field trips to ensure the student gets to and from school and to the proper places safely.
Assists with pre-lunch and lunch activities (e.g., heat food, chop food, collect lunch money, feeding, etc.) to help the teacher and lunch personnel get the student fed.
Attends meetings and in-service presentations (e.g., first aid, CPR, emergency procedures, behavior management, IEPs, etc.) to acquire and convey information relative to job functions.
Communicates with supervising instructional staff and professional support personnel for the purpose of assisting in evaluation progress and/or implementing IEP objectives
Monitor students during assigned periods within a variety of school environments (e.g., lunch, bus stops, playground, classroom, restroom, field trips, public transportation, assemblies, kitchen, etc.) to maintain a safe and positive learning environment.
Participates in the implementation of IEP goals to meet IEP goals and district benchmarks.
Participates in the implementation of student behavior plans to ensure adequate and safe student learning.
Assist in the provision of instruction, under the supervision of the teacher, to the students in a variety of individual and group activities (e.g. academic subjects, social skills, daily living skills, giving oral tests, etc.) for the purpose of reinforcing instructional objectives; implementing IEP plans, and ensuring students' success in school.
Secure a substitute to perform all responsibilities when absent.
Demonstrate ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students in school environment and the community.
Performs other related duties as assigned by the principal or special education director to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
In addition to the responsibilities and requirements listed above, the Bus Paraprofessional's duties include the following items:

Arrive promptly at the designated time and place to begin route.
Make sure all students are safely in their classes each morning. Do not leave students unattended.
Assist in loading and unloading students at all times, always checking the bus to make sure no student is left on the bus.
Make sure all students are secure in their seats before the bus moves. Safety is a priority. For students with special problems, sit by them to ensure their safety and the safety of others.
Contact the parents immediately if a child becomes ill on the bus; and also contact the case manager.
Have available on the bus the names and numbers of student's parents; and have the name and number of someone who can be called if the parent cannot be reached.
In addition to the responsibilities and requirements listed above, the Paraprofessional Nurse Bus Aide duties includ the following items:

Possess valid Alabama Board of Nursing ( ABN ) License
Possess current CPR certification
Administer medication - both prescription and non-prescription as necessary - in accordance with the ALSDE medication policy; document per medication policy.
Abide by individualized health plan (IHP) on SPE students who require a plan due to health needs.
Perform invasive procedures according to policy; document per policy.
Attend any necessary training beneficial to paraprofessional nurse aide position and conduct any necessary training as deemed necessary.
Adhere to the Cherokee County Board of Education (CCBOE) Policy, Alabama State Department of Education (ALSDE) School Health Services Policy, and the Alabama Board of Nursing (ABN) Policy.
Perform any other duties as assigned by the Supervisor, Principal, Lead Nurse and/or Superintendent.
Salary Range: According to Cherokee County Schools Salary Schedule. Actual salary will be determined by degree and verified experience.
