Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated Special Education Paraprofessional for the 2026-27 school year to support students with diverse learning needs within an inclusive educational environment. This role involves working closely with special education teachers, students, and families to facilitate individualized learning experiences. The ideal candidate will possess a strong understanding of childhood development, classroom management, and specialized instructional strategies to promote student success. Duties
Assist in implementing individualized education programs (IEPs) by supporting instructional activities tailored to each student’s needs. Provide direct support to students with developmental disabilities, autism, or other special needs, ensuring their safety and engagement during classroom activities. Support classroom management by maintaining a positive learning environment and encouraging appropriate behavior through behavior management techniques. Assist in lesson planning and curriculum development aligned with special education standards, including literacy, math, and early childhood education. Use American Sign Language (ASL) or other communication methods to facilitate effective communication with students who are deaf or hard of hearing. Help supervise and care for preschool or toddler-aged children in classroom settings that may include Montessori or preschool methodologies. Collaborate with teachers and specialists to adapt instructional materials and activities for diverse learners, including those with disabilities. Support students during transitions, breaks, and social interactions to promote social-emotional development and independence. Maintain accurate records of student progress and assist in preparing reports related to IEP goals and objectives. Participate in ongoing professional development related to special education practices, behavior management, and curriculum strategies.
Skills
Strong knowledge of special education principles, including IEP development and implementation. Experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities, autism spectrum disorder, or hearing impairments. Proficiency in teaching methods suitable for early childhood education and literacy instruction. Familiarity with classroom management techniques that foster positive behavior and engagement. Ability to communicate effectively using verbal skills and alternative methods such as American Sign Language (ASL). Understanding of childhood development stages and age-appropriate instructional strategies for toddlers through preschoolers. Experience supporting children in childcare settings or private schools is advantageous. Excellent organizational skills for lesson planning, record-keeping, and progress monitoring. Ability to collaborate effectively with educators, therapists, families, and support staff. Strong interpersonal skills to work compassionately with children of diverse backgrounds and abilities.
