Job description, work day and responsibilities

The Manager, Intellectual Property (IP) Commercialisation, will play a pivotal role in improving and advancing the University’s strategies and efforts related to IP initiatives. This position involves managing the IP portfolio and supporting the development of innovative concepts. The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting thorough due diligence, including the identification of technical aspects, inventorship, and ownership related to core novelty. Additionally, the Manager will determine the most effective methods for protecting IP, including patent prosecution for inventions conducive to licensing/commercialisation opportunities.

This role requires collaboration with various stakeholders across Swinburne's research and innovation ecosystem. The Manager will work closely with research staff, particularly research leaders and inventors, as well as teams focused on major initiatives, proposal development, and grants management. The position will also involve engaging with the Industry Engagement Team and other units within the Innovation and Enterprise portfolio. Furthermore, the Manager will provide guidance on IP education, raising awareness among Swinburne staff about IP protection, IP strategy, and commercialisation pathways, while also managing documentation and negotiations related to technology commercialisation partnerships with external entities.

About You
To be suitable for this role you will need to have experience in the below key accountabilities:

Demonstrated and relevant commercial/legal experience (preferably in the private sector), with specific practical involvement in technology innovation and commercialisation across digital solutions, AI/Machine Learning, Health & Medtech, Cybersecurity, Industry 4.0, or Clean Tech / Deep Tech.
Understanding of processes for intellectual property capture and protection across key international jurisdictions (especially the countries party to major treaties and harmonisation initiatives).
Ability to work autonomously and in a team environment, to develop and implement management processes, and to follow through on tasks to completion with minimal supervision.
Knowledge of government funding programs (at both state and federal levels) available to facilitate IP commercialisation, industry development and collaboration between industry and research organisations.
Understanding of contract research, intellectual property capture and commercialisation processes as conducted in Australian Universities.

Qualifications

Tertiary qualifications, preferably in law and/or a relevant scientific discipline. Additional intellectual property, patent attorney, business or management qualifications/experience would be highly regarded.

**This position is open only to applicants who have work rights in Australia
