Job Description
2. Staff nurses posted in any department (ward, ICU, ICCU, OT, etc.) are responsible to the sister in-charge of that department for all administrative and clinical work. 3. Any other duty, administrative or clinical, assigned by her senior related to nursing.
4. Administrative Duties:
a. Handling over and taking over charge on change of duty staff
b. Cleanliness of ward, annexes, furniture, linen, equipment and stores
c. Preparation of demands for diets.
d. Preparation of dressings, bandaging and splints and items required for dealing with emergencies.
e. Keeping an inventory of all items under their charge.
f. Ensure the serviceability of all equipment and stores on charge and accounting for them.
g. Safe custody and accounting of dangerous and controlled drugs.
h. Replenishment of expandable stores and obtaining replacement of unserviceable non-expandable items, in accordance with standing orders.
i. Exchanging of clean linen and patients’ clothing for soiled ones.
j. Disinfecting the ward, when required.
k. Safe custody and maintenance of medical records of patients.
l. Control of visitors and public relation.
Clinical Duties and Responsibilities of nurse staff:
Admission and discharge of patients.
Preparation of patient’s file
Sending the patient’s file at the reception at the time of discharge
Getting the discharge summary prepared by the Duty Doctor/ Consultant.
Informing all ward transfers to the reception.
Assistance and instructions to patients and their relatives and imparting health education to patients/ relatives.
Personal hygiene of patients, viz. sponging, care of mouth, back etc.
Serving and removing hot water bottles, urinals and bedpans.
Feeding of patients who cannot eat themselves.
Ward round with Nursing Superintendent and Consultant if required.
Administration of medicines and/or injections as ordered and recording the same in the case sheet.
Assisting doctor in carrying out certain procedures whenever required.
Assisting and actually carrying out technical procedures like sterilization, preparation of injection, indenting of medicines, giving enema, oxygen therapy etc.
Collecting samples for investigations whenever required. Getting all tests done, which the treatment doctor orders.
Taking and recording of vital signs like pulse, BP, temperature and respiration.
Pre-and post-operative care of the patients.
Escorting patients to and from the department/ OT, either herself or with the help of ward boy.
Supervision of housekeeping staff. Getting patient’s room cleaned ----- a day.
At each change of over, the outgoing nurse
The responsibilities of Staff Nurse include the following:
The Staff Nurse reports to the Nursing Superintendent through the Nursing Supervisor.
She/he is responsible for the Nursing Care of the patient, and the overall welfare and wellbeing of the patient in the Hospital. She/he is to ensure that the ward is the home-away from home for the patient.
Attending in-service programmers and updating her/his professional knowledge to render better services to the patient and institution.
Staff Nurse Ward duties include:
Nursing care of patient.
Interpersonal relationship with patient, attendants, visitors and other staff of the ward.
Upkeep of the ward, Nurses Station and ancillary areas.
Demand, receipt, upkeep and inventory control and check of drugs and other patient care consumables and non-consumables.
Reception of patient on admission, checking into room, making the patient comfort, briefing the patient about Hospital rules and facilities and informing the Doctor/Consultant.
Ward rounds with Doctors, follow up of patients, medication, investigation and documentation.
Constant care and vigil of the patient and informing the Doctor if there is any change in the condition.
Carry out the orders of the doctors and assist them in procedures
Transfer- in/out of patient and conveyance of patient for investigation.
Pre-operative and post-operative care of patient
Attend to the personal, medical and nursing needs of the patient.
Supervision of diet/ meals to the patients
Supervision of change of patient clothing and Hospital linen
Checking and maintenance of Bio-medical of the ward and other non-medical fittings.
Ensuring availability of creative comforts for the patients
Ensure adherence of visitor timings
Enlighten achievements of Hospital to the patients and attendants
In case of Hospital death, complete all formalities with dignity and concern.
She/ he should work with other ward staff as a team to ensure co-operation and co-ordination.
She/ he should be aware of each and every facility available in the hospital.
She/he should be a good communicator and ensure telephone etiquette and respond to enquiries intelligently and politely.
She/he should carry out any other duty assigned by his/her supervisors from time to time.
