Every day, many thousands of servers, hosts, and chefs use Toast POS (Point of Sale) to serve millions of guests in their restaurants. The Device Experience team sits at the intersection of Toast’s hardware and software and builds cloud based services and device software that creates a frictionless customer experience. Starting from the first time a device is provisioned until its end-of-life, the team takes a system-oriented approach crafting solutions that take software, hardware, networking, user experience, people and processes into account to provide the best results for our users.
We are seeking a Staff Software Engineer who is not only hands-on with coding but also highly skilled in designing and architecting scalable, end-to-end systems. In this role, you will take the lead in defining the technical vision and strategy, ensuring the team builds modern, robust, and efficient solutions that align with business objectives while maintaining a strong focus on customer needs.
As a key technical leader, you will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, driving innovation and best practices in software development. Your expertise will be instrumental in shaping the architecture of software systems that manage and integrate with hardware devices, ensuring reliability, scalability, and performance.

About this roll (Responsibilities)
Lead the design and development of Toast’s software services and POS application to enable a seamless device experience for customers.
Collaborate with Product Management, Hardware, QA and other Software teams on the product roadmap and requirements to build a long term vision for Toast.
Create technical requirements and detailed designs of the software system being developed.
Lead effort estimation sessions and use sound judgment to enable the planning of projects.
Diagnose performance bottlenecks and implement optimizations.
Make solid technical decisions keeping software quality, security, and maintainability in mind.
Do you have the right ingredients? (Requirements)
8+ years of cloud software development experience with backend technologies such as GraphQL, Kotlin/Java REST microservices
Experience developing software to manage and support hardware and network devices
Hands-on experience with Android applications development in Kotlin, or Java
Experience designing and optimizing relational (SQL) and NoSQL databases (Postgres, DynamoDB), and with data modeling, query optimization, and performance tuning.
Software architecture experience designing and delivering complex and scalable systems
Experience working in a team with Agile/Scrum methodology
Passionate about solving large scale problems and building great software for customers.
