Applicants will be expected to have a strong clinical background, in addition to experience in research, teaching, quality assurance and administration/management in a public hospital.

Royal Hobart Hospital is Tasmania’s largest hospital and major referral centre. As the major clinical teaching and research centre, RHH collaborates with the University of Tasmania and other institutions. All our services work closely together to focus on delivering excellence in healthcare to achieve improved outcomes for our consumers, our workforce, and the Tasmanian community.

The Department of Anaesthesia and Perioperative Medicine provides a comprehensive range of general and specialist clinical anaesthesia services including trauma, paediatric surgery, cardiothoracic, neurosurgery, vascular and obstetrics specialities. Anaesthesia services are also provided for the Cardiac Catheter Lab, Endoscopy Unit and Medical Imaging Department including Interventional Radiology, CT/MRI and PET scan. We also provide an Acute Pain Service and Perioperative Medicine service.

The Department of Anaesthesia and Perioperative Medicine is a high-quality specialist teaching department with significant research activity. We participate in multi-centre research trials and encourage local research. We have strong links with University of Tasmania Faculty of Health Science and the Menzies Research centre.

Provide clinical services of the highest possible standard to patients and their families.
Actively pursue performance improvements in Department of Anaesthesia and Perioperative Medicine by involvement in clinical support roles.
Actively pursue improved outcomes for patients by participating in teaching and research relevant to anaesthesia.

Salary

Medical Practitioners (Public Sector) Award

A remuneration package comprising the Agreement base salary, relevant allowances and other entitlements will be negotiated with the successful applicant dependent on clinical experience and seniority.

Base salary points range for Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1 at $210,000 through to Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 11 at $288,000 with further salary increments available.

Please note that access to the Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner salary range $2+1,472 - $301,34+ is subject to the successful applicant satisfying the criteria for Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1, 2 or 3 as outlined in the Medical Practitioners (Tasmanian State Service) Award
In addition, the following allowances calculated on the salaried incremental point may be available:

Provision of a fully maintained private plated motor vehicle (subject to working full-time hours) OR allowance in lieu of motor vehicle currently set at $28,38+ pro rata per annum, paid fortnightly (with CPI indexation on 1 July each year).
Continuing Professional Development Allowance of $16,480 pro rata per annum.
Relocation allowance.
On call allowance % of Base Salary.
All other allowances as per current Award.
And subject to approval from the Private Patient Scheme Committee (PPS), 35% of Base salary plus on-call, pro rata) of additional payment will be paid from (PPS). If not admitted to the PPS, a 35% in lieu of PPS of base salary will be paid.
Other Benefits:

You will have access to salary package a range of benefits including living expenses up to $+,010 + $2,650 in meal entertainment each FBT year + other benefits if eligible.
You will also have access to accommodation and relocation costs.


Details of Appointment

Multiple positions are available.

Permanent and Fixed term (up to 3 years), day work (with on-call), working a minimum of 38 hours per fortnight. Full time appointments are preferred. Commencing September 2026. Casual positions are also available.

Applicants should note that, for a period of twelve months from the date of publication, this selection process may be used to fill subsequent or similar full time and part time vacancies.


Essential Requirements

Holds specialist registration; or
Is a registered Medical Practitioner who is an International Medical Graduate (IMG) who is on the specialist pathway; or
Is a registered Medical Practitioner who is an International Medical Graduate (IMG) who has a recognised overseas specialist qualification and is assessed as having sufficient experience in the speciality.
The Head of the State Service has determined that the person nominated for this job is to satisfy a pre‑employment check before taking up the appointment, on promotion or transfer. The following checks are to be conducted:

Conviction checks in the following areas:
Crimes of violence
Sex related offences
Serious drug offences
Crimes involving dishonesty
Identification check
Disciplinary action in previous employment check


Desirable Requirements

Recognition as an Anaesthetist by the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA) holding FANZCA or equivalent.
Experience in Obstetric, Neurosurgical and Paediatric Anaesthesia in the last 12 months.
Clinical exposure at a tertiary hospital standard within the last 12 months.
