Position Summary

The Cultural Research Assistant is responsible for enhancing an existing staff information guide specific to the Indigenous lands, territories and peoples upon which BGC South Vancouver Island’s Clubs are situated. This initiative supports our efforts to participate in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s Calls to Action, and more specifically Action 92 iii. which states: “Provide education for management and staff on the history of Aboriginal peoples, including the history and legacy of Residential Schools, the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, Treaties and Aboriginal rights, Indigenous law, and Aboriginal–Crown relations”.

Position Details

Wage: $24/hour
Status: Temporary Summer Job Position
Term: June 29 to August 21, 2026
Hours: 30 hours/week
Shift: Monday to Friday, schedule to be determined
Location: Dunford Head Office, Langford. This position is an in-person position and not eligible for remote work
Benefits: 0.6% of straight time pay in lieu of scheduled vacations and paid holidays

Stipulation: Due to funding requirements of the Canada Summer Jobs Grant, this position is only for applicants under the age of 30.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Research and confirm accuracy of current information about each of the Indigenous territories, peoples and treaties in relation to each individual BGCSVI Club location
Update and enhance the existing narrative about South Vancouver Island Indigenous history including: languages spoken, common cultural practices/teachings, ceremonies and protocols used, and Residential Schools that operated in relation to current Club locations
Verify or update links to the correct pronunciation of common Indigenous words used on South Vancouver Island (how to pronounce territory, greetings, thank you, etc.) and prepare appropriate access on the BGCSVI website
Compile a list of Indigenous contacts and community resources including Nations, Council/Band Offices located on South Vancouver Island
Research and compile Indigenous learning resources BGCSVI staff can access to further their knowledge on Indigenous perspectives
Develop a staff orientation guide that is specific to each BGCSVI Club location relative to the corresponding South Vancouver Island Indigenous Peoples, using the above-mentioned research
Source a current map(s) that identifies Indigenous territories and people in relation to current BGCSVI Club locations and prepare for appropriate use on the website
Conduct Indigenous consultation with local Nations
Perform other duties as requested

Qualifications

Willingness to learn about South Vancouver Island Indigenous Peoples and history
Strong research capability
Strong writing skills and ability to produce clear, concise information that is relevant to the project
Strong computer skills including a proficiency in Word, Excel, and Outlook
Post-Secondary education: Indigenous studies, anthropology, history, sociology or training related to research
Keen attention to detail, superior organization and time management skills
Motivated self-starter who is passionate about furthering Truth and Reconciliation
Ability to concentrate for long periods of time
Proven problem solver and critical thinker
Able to operate standard office equipment
Comfortable working in an open office environment
Able to work independently with minimal supervision
Able to meet project timelines
Satisfactory Criminal Record Check
This position is funded in-part by the Canada Summer Jobs Grant and therefore candidates must meet the following requirements:
be aged between 15 and 30 years old (at the start of your summer job)
be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident, or someone who has been officially given refugee protection in Canada and
be legally allowed to work in Canada and hold a current Canadian SIN
