Surgical Nurse (Perioperative Nurse)Key Responsibilities:
• Preoperative Care:
• Patient Assessment:
• Conduct preoperative assessments to evaluate the patient’s health status, medical history, and readiness for surgery.
• Review the patient’s medical records, lab results, and ensure all necessary documentation is complete.
• Patient Education:
• Educate patients and their families about the surgical procedure, including preoperative preparations, expected outcomes, and postoperative care.
• Address any concerns or questions the patient may have about the surgery.
• Intraoperative Care:
• Assistance During Surgery:
• Prepare the operating room by ensuring all necessary surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies are sterile and ready for use.
• Assist the surgical team by passing instruments, sponges, and other items during the procedure.
• Monitor the patient’s vital signs and provide continuous care to ensure their safety throughout the surgery.
• Aseptic Technique:
• Maintain strict aseptic techniques to prevent infections and ensure a sterile surgical environment.
• Assist in the draping of patients and positioning them correctly for the procedure.
• Postoperative Care:
• Immediate Postoperative Care:
• Monitor the patient’s condition as they recover from anesthesia, checking vital signs and assessing for any immediate complications.
• Provide pain management and administer medications as prescribed.
• Patient Recovery:
• Assist in the patient’s transition from the recovery room to the postoperative unit or discharge them when appropriate.
• Provide detailed postoperative instructions to the patient and their family regarding wound care, medication, activity restrictions, and follow-up appointments.
• Collaboration and Communication:
• Team Collaboration:
• Work closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, surgical technologists, and other members of the healthcare team to ensure a smooth and efficient surgical process.
• Communicate effectively with the surgical team regarding patient status, changes in condition, and any concerns during the procedure.
• Patient Advocacy:
• Serve as an advocate for the patient’s safety and well-being throughout the surgical experience.
• Documentation and Record-Keeping:
• Accurate Documentation:
• Document all aspects of patient care, including preoperative assessments, intraoperative activities, and postoperative recovery.
• Ensure that all surgical records are complete, accurate, and comply with healthcare regulations and standards.
• Equipment and Supply Management:
• Equipment Handling:
• Ensure that all surgical equipment is functioning properly and that any malfunctioning equipment is reported and removed from use.
• Supply Management:
• Maintain an adequate inventory of surgical supplies, restocking as necessary and ordering additional supplies when needed.
• Quality Improvement and Safety:

• Participate in quality improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing patient safety and surgical outcomes.
• Contribute to the development and implementation of protocols to improve surgical care practices.
• Infection Control:

Qualifications:
• Education:
• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred; Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) may be accepted with relevant experience.
• Licensure:
• Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of employment.
• Certification:
• Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) required; Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) preferred.
• Certification in Perioperative Nursing (CNOR) is highly desirable.
• Experience:
• Minimum of 1-3 years of experience in surgical nursing or a related field.
• Skills:
• Strong knowledge of surgical procedures and operating room protocols.
• Excellent attention to detail and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
• Strong communication and teamwork skills.
• Ability to remain calm and focused under pressure.

Working Conditions:
• Full-time or part-time position, with possible rotating shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays.
• May involve standing for extended periods and lifting or moving patients and equipment.
